Thanks again !  Seeing this thing up against the dimming night sky, I can see why they chose that colour pattern:

Mossie

Unusual colour & I like the pattern too.

Thinking of similar stuff for creating a pattern, we bought some silicone anti-slip sheet for a rug, it's cheap & it'll adhere to the surface of the model too.  Other options are pair of the Missus' old fish net tights or some lace/tulle, both of which are available in all sorts of patterns.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Thanks!  Nylons work so-so...perhaps fishnet hose might be better? (my wife would kill me if I cut hers up, though)

Decided to make the flat exhaust have a little more maneuverable features:

I've seen fishnets used on larger objects for creating a snake skin style pattern, you just slip it over the object & the tight conforms pretty well.  For models you're probably going to have to cut them up unless you can find childs sizes.  You should be able to pick up some cheap ones since it doesn't matter if you ladder them!  That might make an interesting pattern in itself...

Tulle is something you should be able to get hold of easily too, from craft shops, dress makers or even chop up some old net curtains.  You can find all sorts of fabrics, weave sizes & patterns.  Just cut out a bit & spray over the top.
