whereas SAM is a pale shadow of it's former self and featuring far too many dildos with wings.

Now theres a real show stopping idea for a whiff.  Would get us banned from any show we tried to display it at thou LOL.

Surely if it was tastefully marked up it would be acceptable...I was thinking that one of the virgin schemes might go down well....

There was a discussion about fitting a them to the nose of a Comet and another to the tail IIRC-  (Was that not what the Comet model was for Steve?) With the idea being a joke version of the AEW Nimrod - I suspect I was drunk at the time>

Month to month they change. One month it's SAM, the next, SAMI. The month after Tamiya and then FSM. If I buy off the stands I review first, then buy. Sometimes I even walk away empty handed if they are all poo-poo (with an english accent).

I can only agree too thoroughly with Philp
"All of them seem to have their share, some months are worse than others.  I think the editors rely too much on the spell checker and don't actually read the articles.  Keep thinking I should offer my services as a proof reader."

If I see another example of site being confused with sight I'm going to explode :banghead: - it's not bloody hard - just read the damn copy, though having dealt with the editor of SAMI I can see where the problem is. I thought a magazine editor might provide a style guide and maybe a recommeded word count - silly me

I remember sending SAMI an e-mail about potential forthcoming kits, they just copied it word for word into the magazine.  Quite annoying actually, okay it's only a snippet so I didn't kick up a fuss, but they didn't credit me which is plagiarism, strictly speaking.  This is something the publishing industry take very seriously if you do it to them.  But that also accounts for spelling problems, they just take an article & plug it in, I thought editors were supposed to edit?

Rant over!
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Taking a slightly different tack I'm going to plug in Military Modelling and Model Military International.

MM is probly the best reference mag out there IMO.  Their articles are always well researched by very knowledgable people and are usually tied in with the latest big kit releases and normally accompionied by a build article by Steve Zaloga who remains my favourite reviewer.  Why?  Because he tells what is wrong with a kit (and he really knows his onions) and then tells you how to fix it!! rather than sitting there whining about how the kit is an unbuildable POS.  Where the mag falls down is its lack of colour and the fact that the whole tone and style is stuck in the 70s - as is much of its readership!

MMI on the other hand is nowhere near as useful for reference, but for handy "how to" tips and articles it is second to none.  I have learnt so much about the *techniques* of armour modelling and dioramas from that mag.  Lots of good quality colour photos as well.

My biggest complaint with all model mags is the grammar and spelling errors.  All of them seem to have their share, some months are worse than others.  I think the editors rely too much on the spell checker and don't actually read the articles.  Keep thinking I should offer my services as a proof reader.

I agree with Gary in that all of the mags can be good depending on what that months content is and whether it interests you or not. As for book reviews I find all of them carry much the same but in this instance I would have thought MAM was your best bet.

As for "glorified catalogues" - that's one of the main reasons I buy some mags - to keep abreast with whats out there, its one of their main roles IMHO

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I don't buy any of the mags anymore, the internet usually has all the info I need.
Works out a lot cheaper too, and the missus doesn't moan about thee being stacks of mags stuffed everywhere around the house........like my fishing and motorbike mags lol
