Actually thats a common fallacy Deino. The PW1120 was an F100 core (70% commonality) with a smaller fan giving it a very low bypass ratio. It weighed about 1300kg, which is only 230kg lighter than AL-31F. It is notably narrower of course, but the difference isn't huge.

Thanks for that info, that was new to me  :o  ... but for my opinion just the bigger diameter alone requires a complete redesign for a kit !

So it would be difficult to build a Lavi out from this J-10 kit !

Some very nice side views there. Especially like the Russian display team version....

Lancer, it's a Chinese demo bird, the star has some scribling inside, like the insignia on PAF plane!

Max. thrust of the PWA1120 in afterburner was 20,000 lb., I do believe the AL-31F has rather more poke than that.  Also, the PWA1120 was designed to fit the same hole in Israel's Phantom's that the J-79 did so it's limited in diamter to the same 38 inches as the J-79.

PW1120
max diameter: 1.02m
length: 4.11m
weight: 1292kg
dry thrust: 6,137 kg
a/b thrust : 9,337 kg
mass flow rate: 80.9kg/sec
pressure ratio: 26.8
SFC: 0.80 dry/1.86 a/b

AL-31F
max diameter: 1.18 m
length: 4.95m
weight: 1530kg
dry thrust: 7,770kg
a/b thrust: 12,500kg
mass flow rate: 110kg/sec
pressure ratio: 23
SFC: 0.75 dry/1.92 a/b

So yes, AL-31F is about 16% wider at the point of greatest diameter. It also sucks a lot more air, needing an enlarged inlet.

That's a "What if" version of the Chinese airforce (PLAAF) "August 1st Aerobatic Demonstration Team" which has currently some Chengdu J-7EB on strength ... so maybe in a vew years !

If folk are looking for good data on the Lavi, try Uncommon Aircraft - Lavi.  *BEG* For those who want something different, I have seen a study Northrop did with IAI for a F-5G(F-20)/Lavi hybrid to lower development and production costs.  The powerplant was an F404 and there were two distinct variants.  One of my last bosses there worked on it and I do have some sub-rosa data if anyone's interested.

Was this one of the several configurations studied for the "Arye"-programme ???

This is one model of a configuration with two engines !
