Tanks for the memories!

You know what a nut I am on 'Hollywood Hardware', well aircraft arn't my only passion.
This is a M-24 Chaffee used in the 1950's movie "Desert Rats". The camo looked rough, as if the 'sand' was hand painted over the Olive Green. Also, the 50 cal. M/G was removed from all these Pzkw III's for the movie.This will be a series of Armour models...some actual, most Hollywood!

That is nice.  Seen a guy over at Finescale do an M-47 as a Tiger from Battle of the Bulge.

We have a local who did the Tiger from Kelly's Heroes (one of my favorite movies).  Think he is planning Oddball's Sherman also.

Cobra, I have been thinking of modeling the Rat Patrol for a little bit.  Had 2 of the old Aurora sets (still got the dunes) and been thinking of doing the Jeeps in either 72nd or 35th.  And maybe a German Priest, I mean, Panzer.

I do have a few...the tank from "Last Crusade", Oddball's M-4 and the Tiger from 'Kelly's Hero's', the enemy tank from 'Things to Come', and an M-47 from 'The Devils' Brigade'...finding them is the problem! Oh, all 1/35. Was watching Battleground the other day and thrilled to find a Hellcat in it....WOW!

I absolutely love these, as well, Glenn.  I've been watching DVDs of Combat! lately and love the M41s and M48s that you see in that.

Movie tanks and planes are subjects not modeled often enough, IMHO.

According to IMDb, the German tanks in the film were T-34s, converted by a Yugoslav production company for a film called "The Battle of Neretva".

The first time I saw the Tigers from Kellys' Heros' was in the early '60's in a Russian movie called 'The Big Battle', about the Kursk Offensive. Yes, they are chassis and running gear from a T-34 'with solid wheels'! Also, in the movie 'Night of the Generals', they use 'T-34/Tigers' in the war scenes, although they have the holes in the wheels.
In the 'Combat' episode about the disabled truck and the Sarg Saunders and a German tank...is it a M-47~48 or a M-41? I built it as a M-41...but I'm sure I was wrong!

That was indeed an M41.  The episode was The Duel, wasn't it?  Do you have pictures of that build?

Logan, I do have the tank...I actually saw it today. (while looking for something else?)
My colour scheme is probably R/S but I was watching it in B&W at the time. I did it in European Sand, with Green and Brown blotches, and then dirtied it up.
It's great to talk with someone who looks at a war movie for something more than the acting.

It's refreshing as well to talk to someone who does AFV spotting while watching war movies, as well.  There's some great ones to be seen out there, but I love the conversions because they take a few more seconds to ID.  I do military vehicle spotting watching anything from Combat! to Kelly's Heroes to The Fighting Seabees to Red Dawn to Windtalkers.

I come from the US, which may not be surprising, but my age is usually a bit more surprising.  I'm only 22 but can usually tell a real Type 95 or StuG III from an M5 High-Speed Tractor or FV432 with a Hollywood superstructure the first time through.  I grew up watching Dirty Dozen, The Longest Day, and Patton.  I even watched Combat! on the old Nostalgia Channel so often as a kid (9-12) that I got the entire 5-season set for Christmas this year!

They weren't terribly historically accurate back then, but some people forget that good war movies were made before Saving Private Ryan and good war TV series before Band of Brothers.

If you wanted to paint it how Vic Morrow might have seen it on the set, I think standard US Army paints of the 50s and early 60s would have been the way to go since Combat! was made in cooperation with the Department of the Army, but if you wanted to paint it up about like it looked on the show and as the producers intended the viewer to have interpreted it, I think standard German WWII colors would have been fine.

I used to have old M41 army men tanks that were the same kind used in the series and I loved that about them.



That's the exact same kind I used to have (it says M60, but it's really an M41).

I would even paint up the old Army Men tanks I had and those were the neatest ones I owned.  I loved painting schemes, but didn't have the patience for actual modeling as a child.
