T-54/55/62, Type 59/69/79, TR-580/85 MBTs and everything else based on them

Yesterday I remembered that, when the PRC developed the Type 89 SPATG, tank chassis was tried.

IIRC, that tank chassis was a Type 59.

And then I remember there being a fan proposal of an up-armoured export Type 89.

Think of a combination of the two......

The Romanian enlarged the turret bustle on their local production variant of T-55, IMHO producing a more asthetically-pleasing turret than the stock T-55 one.

Is there some inherent shortcoming to the stock T-55 turret that prompted the Romanians to make this change?

Thanks in advance.

I think they chose to store the ammunition in the bustle, rather than the hull, as per the normal T55.

Browsing Wikipedia in search of What-if ideas, I found the T-62 described as being more than twice as expensive as the T-55 and not appropriately more effective than the older tank with improved AP shell, but it found some successes with various Third World armies (though not WarPac countries, even those that produced the T-62 for export; Romania even kept playing with the T-55 design) and was chosen by North Korea as the basis for reverse-engineering.  Is it because Third World clients don't get access to the new HVAPDS shell and therefore had to go with the bigger gun?

The T-62, being a development of the T-54/55, actually shared a number of parts with the older tanks, particularly automotive components.

So did the extra cost (the T-62 is said to be more than twice as expensive as the T-55) come from the turret and the associated systems?

Primary turret systems.  Slightly increased and improved armour in the hull as well, AIUSI.

Did the export versions of the Type 69 contain Western technologies?  Or were they still very much derived from the knowledge gained from captured T-62?

Fulcrum

I think the Israeli's have figured out how to fit a Merkava turrent on a T-55

either that or the Israeli's have "vismoded" their T-55 turrents to look more like their Merkavas.

Or a Hezbollah vismod (they have those tanks & usually captured israeli combat uniforms while Hamas has no tanks or else the israelis would have destroyed them already or go without spare parts & fuel.)
