The 'Furchtbar'.

Having never had a reason to build my Hobbycraft 1/48 MiG-17, having a Lindberg Cutlass about ready to arrive from Rollmodels, and Vought having proposed a Cutlass with a Nene based engine rather than the twin Westinghouse Wimps, it should be suitable for the USSR to ferret out the design and engineer it up a bit to their standards.

The base kit:

If there is a serious mis fit between the Lindberg and Hobbycraft kits, the Cutlass will get re engined with Tumansky Minimums or the like.

Russian fiddly bits to follow.

So, the Cutlass my wind up looking a bit like a Cutlass/Venom blend with a fatter exhaust to accomodate the afterburning Kimov/Nene of the Fresco series.

And thank-you to Weaver who suggested the machine be named after some Cossak fighting knife.

The Goose gets first priority before this but if time allows, it'll get a go.

Tony Buttler's book on American Secret Projects mentions a Vought Model 346 with a Nene. On page 22 in the same book, there is a view of a Cutlass-like machine seen in a 3 view drawing that is a single engined bird and from the shape of the fuselage looks as though it could house a Nene without too much trouble. It is a Vought Model 367 and has a Westinghouse XJ-40-We-10, and engine I have no knowledge of whatsoever.

That's all I know off the top of my head.

Actually, the Soviets came up with their evolution of Nene that is more powerful than the RR Tay (Nene with afterburner) for use with a supersonic fighter that is a parallel development to the MiG-19.

Am having thoughts of the machine being a technology demonstrator with the Cutlass' tendency to flip end over teakettle worked properly out. Yet, the jet still had problems earning it the Western name "Furchtbar" as it was first seen flying in E. Germany. FYI, 'Furchtbar' means something akin to 'terrible'.

Hey guys, did you Know................the Cutlass had a Nickname among U.S.Navy Pilots?

?? it was known as the 'Gutlass'!!!! how could such a Design be a GLORIOUS Sviet Design without having a Better Engine Set up? hmmm?

I think a benefit to this scenario is that the plane wouldn't have had to stick with derivatives of J34 and J46...... something vaguely close in size would do.

The kit arrived yesterday!

It's here for an on time start.

[Edit] The Hobbycraft retooled MiG-17 kit was brought up and conversion to an afterburning Nene-like engine will be massively tricky for me. Also, the plastic is quite good, but also a bit 'doughy' when sanded as well as a bit more flexible in the wing area than what I'd like to see.

Am reconsidering the backstory as how to get a Cutlass like machine into the hands of the Soviets. An Ekranoplan was thought about, but do want something airborne instead. Additionally, the machine should be based in E. Germany where the west could see it for the first time and the free Germans give it the NATO code name of 'Furchtbar'. Engines for the Glorious USSR to use? Why not those of the MiG-19 just in prototype form.

More to come and is a completely separate project from the F7U-E Electric Knife.
