Hoyhoy`Al

Been shopping today for a bottle of Johnson`s Klear as my old bottle was very old and thick and found this:-

Its no longer clear, has a sort of milky colour and much runnier than the old favourite.
I`ve dunked a vac` canopy in it and it don`t seem to have that sparkle that the old stuff gave  so will have to re-dip.
But the problem is that I`m doing a car and hate gloss paints of any type, so I used to paint matt, polish and then overspray with Klear.
Has anyone used this yet and what were the results ?.

cheers :drink:

Gary, sounds like your going to be pioneering this experiment. I'm curious to see the results too. Future has switched to the Pledge label also, but I haven't picked any up yet so I don't know if there's a difference.

Apparently, Andy Mullen at BM ,tried it a few weeks ago - the results weren't exactly joyful.

It's thinner, and does not perform as well as it's predecessor....

Hi Hog,

Unfortunately this is not our beloved Klear but a new improved version for the UK that was previously sold in France as Klir. It is not the same - it leaves a milky residue and dries to a brittle consistency (not the right word I know) and in about six months gets a brown tinge to it.

I fell into the same 'trap' a year or two ago when I bought a huge bottle from a French supermarket.

If it helps you can still buy Klear original (and much loved) at ASDA - the other supermarkets are not stocking it or Wilkinsons (in the UK). According to information on another website it's future is in the balance..... !

I've stocked up with 4 bottles mind you the price is going up ... I paid £2.95 a bottle bedfore Xmas.

Could be Steve, but then the EU Chemical directive would apply in the UK as well, unless we got a country specific opt out for a period. Highly unlikely for a household cleaning material

Well I`ve tried it and the general answer to me seems don`t waste your money.
Dipped canopies have a crazed look to them, looks like stress marks in the corners. With my camera I can`t focus enough to show but there there.
Tried spraying the other day on to a Tamiya Citroen. Pre painted matt black and polished to a slight sheen (could have used coal black and saved the effort). With the old Klear I used to crank the compressor up to 50 or 60 psi, set the Badger on stun (sorry that should read fine spray) and no problem. It was nearly dry when it hit the model. The new stuff immediately globuled (is that a word ?) on the model then set around the airbrush needle and head. No time to take pics. Grabbed model and ran under tap with toothbrush to clean and then stripped airbrush before it set solid.
Now it might be better for floors but if you see any of the the old stuff- GRAB IT.

Cheers  :drink:

Interesting... Not being familiar with Klear until I took up modelling again 6 months ago, I bought a bottle of the "Pledge" Klear on the asumption that that was what you were talking about. I've been dipping canopies in it since with satisfactory results, although I did wonder to some extent what all the fuss was about. Never tried using it for anything else.......

Well Waitrose still have the traditional stuff in stock so got a couple of bottles.

Didn't Nev's Mr's use some to polish the floor with once ? Strange that  ;D

For those near Bristol, Asda at Cribbs Causeway have two or three trays of the older stuff, or they did on Friday anyway. I took three bottles home and I reckon they'll probably outlast me if I can store them OK.

She sure did!

I whinged about it enough that she went and bought me 2 new bottles, which is enough to last me several decades :)

Well I hit the local ASDA on Saturday and got several lifetime's supply. If anyone's really stuck for a bottle, send me a PM, since there are a few to spare.

I can just see the Johnson's marketing boys sitting in their office wondering why they have this sudden rise in sales

Nope, apparently they are not bothered by our market sector to take notice....
