Spotted a Mach 2 1/48 Thor IRBM reviewed in SAMI.  It describes it as "rough around the edges, does in the end make a fine & impressive model".

Mach 2 have a 'Lift Off' range, includes six Thor & two Delta variants in 1/48 & three R-7 Semyorka variants in 1/72.  They'd look good on the Cold War SIG stand.

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

i picked up the 48 scale Thor IRBM when it first came out, a decent enough kit, i ended up bogging myself dowm with its exhaust trying to replicate the example which used to be displayed at Hendon, rings of n guage fine fencing wrapped arounf the bell to replicate its cooling structure, and that was before adding the engine mounting etc, a glutton for punishment back then, lol, i really should complete it some day as all the works been done to it

cheers, Joe

That super king air would make a nice addition to my stash, but I too have been put off by the quality?? of Mach2 kits. Shame really

I scratchbuilt a more-or-less generic 1/72 Vostok launcher back in the mid '90s & I've always wanted that railcar looking transport for it but never got around to it. I wonder with the release of these if we'll get any aftermarket transports/launchers for these.

IIRC there is a paper-card launcher available somewhere on the net.  Shouldn't be too hard to scale it to 1/72 and print it out and fold it.

Ah, yes, here it is with a whole load of other free, paper models of rockets, etc. - http://www.ninfinger.org/models/ClassicPaperSpaceModels/ClassicPaperSpaceModels.html

I very nearly picked up the Super Frelon these make today, but, the stories of woe with these kits made me think again, still no one else makes one do they.

Odd co-incidence there, I was inside a Super Frelon yesterday at the Helicopter Museum at Weston-super-Mare. It's a BIG aircraft, at least the single civvie one built is, I think the French Navy ones were shorter, anyone know for sure?

How bad are Mach 2 kits?   I must admit I am tempted by several of their offerings.  Are they crap or only the normal sort of short-run injection kits (like High Planes, which are the only one's I've experienced)?

Nice museum, isn't it?

their Super Frelon kit is actually not too bad, some of the smaller parts do need cleanup/replacement but no more than some other limited run/resin kits out there, I have built a few Mach 2 kits, namely the Triton, Leduc and Frelon and have all turned out ok

IMHO they are generally better than Highplanes.

Mach 2's biggest problem seems to be the transparencies to my mind. They tend to the opaque or sometimes even seem to be pebble-dashed! As their kits are fringe market stuff there's very few 3rd party producers make replacements transparencies AFAIK, the single exception to this being the B-45 Tornado, for which Falcon do a nice set IIRC.

Other than that they tend to the usual low production kit problems, flash, indeteriminate small parts, large sprue gates, panel lines not aligning across joints etc. etc.

As I routinely sand raised panel lines off and fill in engraved ones, I don't think thats a big deal.  The transparencies worry me more.  I'm tempted by their C-123 and a few others.  I think I may give them a go...

I've built a couple of Mach 2 kits and enjoyed them. Yup they are typical ltd run with thick sprue gates but take your time and you get some intteresting subjects.
