I saw something rather interesting the other day (some of you have probably already seen it); an Indiana ANG F-16 with WWII invasion stripes and a WWII-era insignia.  Sort of a real-life "What if"; actually it is Aircraft 84-1264 which has a heritage paint scheme honoring the 358th Fighter Group of WWII, the unit the 122nd FW traces its lineage to. The 358th FG flew P-47s and operated in the ETO (European Theater of Operations) earning many citations and decorations.

Check it out at these links:

Are there decals out yet for this aircraft?

On a similar front the USN did a WWII scheme on at least one Hornet for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day.

It was parked on the fantail of the 'Ike' (I think.....) moored in Spithead for the Review. It had black and white stripes and some tricky tail markings too, but I can't find my photos of it just now :(

Kit, I remember a Canadian Hornet at the D-Day 50th Anniversary (if not the one your looking for):

While looking for that one, I found this pic of a Herc with 363rd FS commeration markings (the 179th that operates the Herc is apparently decended from that unit):

There have been a plethora of WWII schemes in recent years, this Italian AMX:

And the 19 Sqn Hawk commerating the 70th Anniversary of the Spitfire & 90th Anniversary of the RAF:

A while back there was also an F-16 in the pre-war glossy blue with yellow wings.

Ahh, if only they had simply gone for a '30s paint scheme.
Unfortunately that F-16 ended up with elements from every major scheme used by that unit since its inception,
wouldn't wanna leave someone out, now would we?  :banghead:

There was a beautiful Hungarian Mig-29 that had the plan form of a Hungarian WWII fighter on it, I can't find it anywhere though

Mossie,

Yes, that Hornet is pretty close to the USN one. I was out on Spithead on a boat when I first saw the one I mentioned and I urged the helmsman to get closer to the 'Ike' to get better photos, but the darn ship is so tall that the view of the F-18 got worse as we closed in! :(

As for the 19 Sqdn. Hawk, it's superb, isn't it? I saw it 'face to face' at the RAF Odiham Families Day last year, but it didn't fly unfortunately. Someone's just done a decal sheet for it, and I may just do that, it'd make a great pairing with a very early Spitfire Mk1 from the same Squadron.

Yeah, Xtradecal do it in both 1/72 & 1/48.  The 1/72 set has several Hawks including the anniversary one, along with the Spitfire, the 1/48 set just has the Hawks.  The Airfix 1/48 Spitfire Mk.I comes with 19 Sqn decals and the flat hood & two bladed prop, which aren't so easy to find in 1/72.

That would be this one:

New form of deception camoflage - the enemy pilot is so busy admiring your paint scheme he/she forgets that you're trying to shoot them down  ;D.

I love those between-the-wars bright colors of the USN and USAAC!
In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.

There was also a Belgian F-16 with a Spifire on it - IIRC Revell did a boxing of this
