It's a pity that the Spiteful is such a total let down.  Awful fit (cockpit), undersized and overpriced.  I bought four and am so disgusted with it that I'm selling a pair off at a loss.

It's a copy of the Czechmaster one, which wasn't too brilliant to start with.  Rubbish.  Avoid!

SAMI have a review of the Spiteful.  The overall conclusion is that the dimensions are accurate except the spinner is oversized, fit is okay, except for a few minor parts such as some cockpit components & the cannon & that general detail is good although some of the panel line engraving is variable.

Although it was designed by Herbert Smith of Sopwith, to my eyes it almost has a Bellanca look to it, with those faired-in struts.

re the Spiteful i'll have to agree with 'mossie'
its no doubt controversial to say, and im sure there will be many who will disagree, unfortunately some magazine (and online) reviewers tend not to be over critical of kits they recieve from manufacturers as a bad review would mean the supplier might not pass along any more freebies for the staff to build (i know of this first hand from a previous experience when i was asked if it would be ok to edit/remove a section id written which explained a major discrepancy in a kit i recieved for review!)

I guess the only way is to build it oneself, or to find out from a modelling colleague as to what its like before committing to purchase, definately one of the really good aspects of forums such as these

re the AZ. Spiteful, i found the old Pegasus kit actually more satisfying to build, the more recent kit stil seeming undersized in comparism to a 'normal' Spitfire

cheers, joe

booo, just noticed too re the MD.500 i had that on my 'to get' list this year, the ACLA. should be a useful addition to the stash tho methinks

I agree with Joe's points regarding reviewers, but surely the point of the review is to promote the kit need I say it pardon the pun "Constructively".
If a kit is a complete "hum dinger" and fit for landfill only, how can it be promoted? Reviews most of all should be honest, neutral and open if nothing else and I am sure there have been a few in the mags of late which point out some of the severe failings of a particular kit and the good points as well.  There is also the human factor or rivet counters who may take it too far in search of perfection, whereas many will be of the "if it looks right.." mentallity.
Seeing is also in the eye if the beholder, and to what extremes they may superdetail a model to make it right, but when this involves spending many times the original value of the kit one wonders why?.

There have also been some reviewers who have sold off freebie kits on certain auction sites I am sure, these kits should ideally have either been sold for charity or returned to the manufacturer.

Food for though, anyone want to start thread on really bad kits?

Cheers
Sandy

yes that sounds like a good idea, let everyone know about our bad experiences with certain kits/manufacturers. It could certainly save everyone some time/effort/money/high blood pressure/ heart attack. Funny thing is 2 kit manufactures I class as bad kit makers begin with A also   ;D

A little putty in the wing roots should make that look good but that bubble canopy looks like it is a little too wide.
