In 1950 as a stop-gap measure to fill the long-range bomber requirement in the Cold War, America offered to lend the R.A.F. 80 used Boeing B-29D bombers to be known as the Washington B.1.
The R.A.F. felt that the aircraft did not satisfy their requirements and the offer was rejected. However they did say that they would accept new-build Convair B-36's, built to R.A.F. standards instead.
America agreed, and so, in September 1950 the first B-36K entered R.A.F. service.
The name Washington had already been issued for the B-29's and could not be re-used, so another major North American city's name was sought, and New York was chosen, the aircraft becoming the New York B.1.
It was not long before someone remarked that as New York was the "Big Apple", the aircraft should be called the BAB1, or BABY and the name stuck.
The last BABY was retired from R.A.F. service in 1962. They were all returned to the U.S.A. and scrapped, so not one example of the BABY exists to-day.

Very sharp! That's an interesting colour scheme, I must say - is it based on a real one?
Some of my models can be found on my Flickr album >>>HERE<<<

That is a pretty beautiful aircraft, man.  Very nice execution.

Jim,

Superb lateral thinking, as is becoming almost normal from you these days. :)

Presumably some of them were flown by 100 Sqdn. with Hunter FR10s carried in the bomb bay? ;)

Is that the Revellogram biggie or a Minicraft 1/144 scale one BTW?

Great scheme!  I always love 'em black on bottom like that.  The BAB1 designation is pretty darn clever.

So instead of "Titanium Overcast", what would be this bird's unflattering nicknames?

'Yorkshire'!

It's about the same size! :)

(Translated into American that equals 'Texas', or 'Alaska' these days.........)

Excellent stuff!...love those colours.
It's a big, wide world out there...so if it's all the same to you I'll just stay indoors!

A favourite aircraft in one of my favourite schemes - great
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.
