I got some 1/144th scale kits to hack up as a kind of rapid prototype of a planned 1/72nd version. I know people like Eddie and Toolslinger do a lot of 1/48th bashes but I'm not that brave yet so I'm starting small!! It's a lot cheaper in 144th too!

Here's the box piccy. Hope these are Okay, never posted any of my pics here before.

Here's a quick tape up of it.

The Tail will be Bronco styled using E-2 tail parts.

I've already started scoring sections of fuselage (though it dosn't show in the pics) that will be cut out and allow me to raise the wings, make a rear loading ramp and I may widen the body too to give a larger cargo area.

If it starts looking a bit heavy for two engines I have two more Harriers in case it needs four.
Very dodgy four engine pic, obviously the rear of the outboard Harrier will be shotened!

Four engines? never mind that - ASYMETRIC! The pure essence of Whiff!

...or it would be if it also had spats!
There are no good kits, bad kits or grail kits, just kitbash fodder.

I hesitate to mention this since you've already started cutting, but if you want to install Pegasus engines in underwing pods, you could also use this arrangement:

OK, Paul, you have my attention

Love the idea
This will good next to my harrihog, the perfect support aircraft for its operations

I do my protypes in 1/114 also but i used white glue so i can recover parts to re use on later projects save on costs and space by dumping the whole thing in warm water

Honestly, it's the honest ones you have to watch out for!!!

Instead of 4 Pegasus engines, stick to the Do-31 theme and use dedicated lift engines as well:

The E-2 has an MTOW of 23 tons, so with recent Pegasus versions you don't need more than 2 engines for VTOL. With a rolling start and a ski jump, you could add several tons more.

Now this looks very promising     Is there anyway of thinning down the rear of the Harrier fusealges a bit Paul ?  They wouldn't need to be quite as bulky.
If I'm not building models, I'm out riding my dirtbike

noxioux

leave 'em bulky, and load it up with weapons.  Say, 4 20mm gunpods to begin with. . .

Very ingenious.  Exciting viewing.

Captain Canada

Nice idea....stick with two engines, tho...then you won't wreck any more of those beautiful little Harrier kits !

Thanks everyone, I thought I'd get a load of replies saying "It's been done already"! One of the reasons I'm building it is I couldn't afford the Planet Models Do31 but I wanted it to look different hence the twin boom layout.
I'm hopefully putting a beefier main gear in so may need the bulkier Harrier fuselage to retract them into (tried a B-29 set last night but they're far too big!). I may be able to crop a bit off and fit chaff/flare launchers in the hole?
I'm not certain but I might be leaning towards an armed assault version instead of the Carrier Onboard Delivery idea.
I'm not too keen on the dedicated lift engines of the Do31 as they are just dead weight in normal flight, great photos BTW.

You could try making the front of the Harrier fuselages a bit narrower. Since you're not using the cockpit, you don't need all the extra width of those intakes.
