QuoteSpanning four decades, "Vickers VC10 - AEW, Pofflers and Other Unbuilt Variants" presents a history of many of the
VC10 project studies proposed by Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft) Ltd., the British Aircraft Corporation and British
Aerospace PLC. The VC10's fortunes were linked to the economic and political influences on this important aircraft
and these are reflected in the design studies.

Intended to fill a variety of roles in the Royal Air Force, these proposals included ballistic missile carrier,
maritime and electronic reconnaissance, airborne early warning, flight refuelling tankers and the world's largest
interceptor.

To meet the disparate needs of these roles, Vickers and BAC proposed multi-role VC10 airframes, modular aircraft
with detachable fuselages and ultimately the fitting of systems from existing types.

Using newly available archive material and original artwork, many of these are described for the first time.

"Vickers VC10 - AEW, Pofflers and Other Unbuilt Variants" is available right now for £8.95, plus postage.

I received my copy of Vickers VC10: AEW, Pofflers and other Unbuilt Variants today.

The book is A4 in size, 38 pages, and professionally printed on good quality paper. Layout is generally good, though there is the occasional bit of white space.

There are many illustrations from original brochures, Chris has drawn many beautiful 3 views of the various wierd and wonderful VC10 variants, and Adrian's 3D renders do a great job of bringing the projects to life.

There are a lot of different VC10 variants covered, and there is much inspiration here for the modellers among us. The fighter version is particularly fine :) The text is well written and informative.

Overall, highly recommended and a bit different from the usual fighters and bombers fare.

Okay, I know you're not going to tell us, but what on earth is a Poffler???

The cover lists it as Volume 3, what are the other titles?
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Thats not Vol 3 thats actually a runway marker on the Artwork (The artist had to explain it on Secret Projects when others came to the same conclusion !)

Just got mine. It's fantastic! Definately worth getting. Quick delivery too!

I got my copy today, it's terrific, but so depressing.  :banghead:

All those incredible ideas and not ONE was turned into reality. You have to think there were some vested interests at work in MoD somewhere. The VC10 equivalents to various Nimrod versions would have made so much sense especially.

Now, how many Airfix Viccies do I have in stock??  <_<
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

^ I may be considered mentally unstable but I find the AEW variant (with the Nimrod AEW.3 radomes) beautiful. There's nowt wrong with a Nimrod (except 40 years of neglect ) but as you say, the VC-10 variants wouild have made so much sense.

I have 1 VC-10 in the stash. It's going to get a Valiant-esque radar nose and some 1/48 scale AGM-69 SRAMs (nee Skybolts) but if you have any available.... we should talk  ;D

PR19_Kit

You're going to need a LOT of extra fins to turn a SRAM into a Skybolt. We saw one at Cosford, providentially parked under the Vulcan's wing next to a Blue Steel, and it had more fins than I have socks!

I believe its 8 fins to each Skybolt? I have a lot of grotty old AAMs, fit for Flash Gordon maybe but not much else. They can give up their fins for the cause.

Which reminds me, I must get some new socks  ;D
