FW-190D Zwilling

During the 1945/46winter bombing campaign against Moscow and Russian factories in the Urals, the Luftwaffe high command realized that they needed an escort fighter with sufficient range to escort their heavy bombers and protect them from Russian interceptors.  The new jets were considered, but their range was extremely limited.  The Focke Wulf company offered to make a twin FW-190D.  The resultant zwilling had the range and performance to perform the escort mission.

For our club contest next March, the theme will be WWII '46.  Any subject that could have been involved had the war continued into 1946 and beyond.  This is the second model I'm working on for that contest.  (See my B-49 thread for the first one http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,24252.0.html )

This is the MPC (Airfix) kit of the FW-190D.  A club member was clearing out some kits that were started, missing parts, decals,...  I picked up this box and found that it actually had parts for 4 FW-190D's.  Three of them were the MPC kit, but there weren't enough parts to build them all and there was only one canopy.  So at least most of the parts will find a use in this model.

I imagine either:
- a single-seater zwilling and an UAV zwilling
- a Mistel: single-seater zwilling above a cockpit-less zwilling to drop

A quick update on this project.  I have the major assembly finished and the basic PSR started.  You can see the epoxy I used to fill the one cockpit and to blend the wings together.  A new tail plane was made from sheet styrene to fit between the two fuselages. This kit basically had no interior, so I build a rudimentary one using some parts from the spares bin and some sheet styrene.  I tried using the macro setting on the camera to show the detail, but the results aren't that great.

Somehow the way the tailplane extends beyond the fins and rudders is wholly appropriate, whereas if you did that on a P-82 it woud look silly. Perhaps something of a Bv-141 in there somewhere? It's looking really good Ed.

A quick update on this project.  The PSR is finished and here it is with a primer coat.  Time to start on the paint job.
