On the subject of honking great engines, here's a thought: the Pegasus had the same stroke as the Centaurus, so presumably it was approximately the same diameter? You could, therefore, take the Centaurus cowlings off a pair of cheap Sea Furies and fit them to the Hampden without too much trouble. The back story would be that the Bristol sleeve-valve engines didn't work out, so these are an 18-cylinder "Twin-Pegasus" engine called the Cerberus.

Pegasus
Diameter: 55.3 in

Centaurus
Diameter: 55.3 in (56.4 in including cowling as power egg)

Lastly, we've spotted the potentially, literally fatal flaw in Greg's flying boat version  ;D, but how about putting a Hampden on a pair of thumping great floats? It would be the RAF equivalent of the He-115.....

And another one: take two cheap Typhoons, cut the noses off them, graft them onto the Hampden and stick some prototype Ps on the side. Backstory is that it's a Hereford protoype re-engined with Sabres when the Dagger turned out to be a dog, but that it never entered production because there were never enough spare Sabres to justify it.

Might get some JMNs poring through their reference books......

The Matchbox Tempest came with alternative Centaurus or Sabre noses so ...

Well I never knew that: cheers!

having looked over the current (Aug 2009) issue of Scale Aircraft Modelling and the build review of Valom's Hereford, just something thats niggled me ever since seeing a Hampden to Hereford conversion in Airfix Magazine all those years ago, as well as picking up the old Maintrack resin engine conversion ...

hopefully im wrong, but from photographs the Hereford had normal parallel'ish in plan view engines which means the fairing on the wing would be narrower than that of the radial engined Hampden, i think the tapering in plan view engines is a hang over from the old 1960's conversion article and hasnt been looked at since

again ill happily be proved wrong, any thoughts ...

cheers, joe

I think you're possible right Joe, looking at the Putman Handley Page book by C.H.Barnes, there's a photo of the prototype Hereford, converted from the cancelled HP.53.  I can see that the hinge line of the u/c doors seem to follow the the join line of the nacelle to wing joint (parrallel so to speak), whereas on the other page there's a photo of a Hampden taken from more or less the same position which definitely shows the same two lines being unparrallel.   However, I would say there's a slight tapering of the Dagger nacelle and you would only have to look at a Fairey SeaFox to see what I mean.  There's an interesting note in the text as to why the Hereford was given that name instead of just calling it a Hampden Mk.II (as in Lancaster or Halifaxes), Short & Harland were given the contract to build the Herefords and it says to avoid giving S&H the Hampden Type Record, Handley Page took responsibility of the wing design to fit the Dagger, the text says " being the extent of non-interchangeability outside of the primary structure".  I would read that as it had a slightly different wing, wouldn't you ?

Now that does look good   with all that power you could get away with a couple of remote turrets, a dorsal and ventral one ( hint, hint)

Joe and Robert,
after perusing Hereford pics, it looks to me that not only is the Dagger nacelle narrower it is also slab-sided beneath the wing, not rounded like
that of the Pegasus powered Hampden.

Interesting.  Single-seat fighter prototype, perhaps?

Im not sure that the visibility would be nearly good enough for a fighter. I hadnt really considered a role for the aircraft, I just thought it would be interesting to see. :)
