I've always liked the P.1040, P.1052, P.1081, Hunter chain of development and he's made a super job of that one. The build thread is well worth reading too.

One day I'll do the resin P.1081 that The Wooksta gave me, that's a real 'sleeper' of an aeroplane.  ;)
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Holy frack!  He made that out of the old Airfix Seahawk kit?  Wow!  Even if it wasn't also a very well done WhIf, making that much of a silk purse from that sow's ear is damn impressive!

Why were they different on the proposed USN version? Just to BE different, or was there some practical reason?

Not certain. IIRC, the wings were not supposed to be foldable, at least in the early design stages? The launch rails were alternatively mounted at the intake sides - also a nice idea.
Maybe for protection of the missiles, or simple span saving issues.

It makes sense that the missiles would be move under the wings to save some space, but the 1601 did have the wing tip mounted winders. http://www.aerospaceweb.org/question/planes/lwf/vought-v1601.jpg
Dizzy, about the intake-mounted missiles, i've never seen any of those, maybe you're thinking about the main gear door pylons? Leptiprince has them on his navy F-16.
