They were probably hedging their bets. Wingtips are great for decreasing drag but when you fire one and keeping the other you are increasing effects against stability of the plane. So the buyer to decide which is better.

Nice cut out view ! Have to find our more about these main gear door rails ?

That's just an overlay - the Sparrow hang under the wings!

I know of an earlier design (the Vought 1100) that carried the Sidewinder rails at the air intake flanks - probably a Crusader heritage, but it looks cool, too. There's also still a lot of the F-8 left:

IIRC, this detail was also carried over to early Model 1600 layouts, but it was dropped for the wing tip solution.

More useful details about Vought's post-F-8 family here:

I'd never seen that Vought 1100, it looks pretty good. I don't know about Vought's models having the gear door pylons but the GD F-16 tested them with Sparrows and apparently, even Skyflash missiles too.

I found those while digging for info for my F-16W. I guess it could work on some other designs, but it would be easier to do it now with the lighter aim-120C/D
with smaller fins.

I keep coming back here to see that F-16 in naval guise. Something about that....

Vought's F-16ish designs for a naval fighter are sexy...!

DogfighterZen

ALL F-16s are sexy... It's the most beautiful design ever to be produced... IMHO, that is... ;D
I have been thinking about the F-16W's second coming and it will be a totally carrier capable version.
As i've imagined it, it will look very much like the land-based version, it will just have the hinges for the folding mechanism of the wings, A-7 front gear and hornet's main landing gear and an external refueling probe. The paint scheme will be stolen from either the Grim Reapers or the Jolly Rogers ...
