I can't believe there isn't already a dedicated thread, so here goes.

To start with, I've always thought the XP-67 lent itself to a jet conversion.  Here a couple of quick ideas:

Initial version:

Updated version with the benefit of swept wings:

All hail the God of Frustration!!!

With swept wings, it looks like an over-sized -262.  With turboprops, it might've made a good COIN machine for Vietnam.

I know I put these on my thread. But, what-the-hey I'll show them here too. Here are a couple Moonbat profiles I did.

Stick with propellers on it.  IT just looks better.

Maybe convert to turbine engines or give it contra-rotating propellers.

Better yet, a pair of propellers with as many blades as you can manage under that spinner.  Un-ducted Fans Baby! Or what ever they are using now for describing that concept.

As a big fan of the Moonbat, I agree with all the above!!

Hi guys,
love the MoonBat -- that red profile would make a great post-war Bendix Trophy racer !!
you may as well all give up -- the truth is much stranger than fiction.

In the old What if site, there was a section on stories revolving around What If aircraft.  I tried to access it the other day, because there was an excellent story about a P-67B nightfigher in Europe in WWII.  Is this old site gone forever?

I think that burried engines like this and swept wings would make it look better..

that looks rather like the 3-seat Messerschmitt Me-329 -- used Me-410 wing shape reversed -- sadly only a wooden mockup was built.

Hello everyone!

I am not exactly your average kind of model maker... True, I DO have tens of aircraft plastic models, including some rare ones, but they are still lying in a cupboard somewhere, for lack of space. All the built kits I took with me a few years ago from my previous address got damaged in the move... and it kind of pissed me off, so I don't know when I'll built my other models (hopefully we'll find a bigger house in a couple of years' time and I will have enough space to have my own workshop... (first on my "to do" list will be my Convair XF-92, Curtiss XP-55, Grumman XP-50 and Curtiss SC-1...)

Anyway, for the time being, I am a VIRTUAL model maker... I indulge in something I love just about as much as plastic: creating imaginary models or variants on my computer... I have no knowledge in 3D rendering, CG or whatever... so I do it the old fashioned way: in a graphics software using layers, filters, effects and my imagination.

Instead of a long presentation, I thought I ought be doing a special version of an aircraft I've loved all my life (got hooked on aircraft as a kid through my dad, an aviation buff who assembled several hundred plastic models). So here it is, my own Navy version of the McDonnell XP-67 Moonbat, which I chose to designate the XF2M-1 Manta... Why so? Well, as we know the later Phantom became FD (then FH), I thought that maybe the Navy could have considered at some point the use of the letter "M" for McDonnell, and reallocate the unused General Motors F2M designator, initially planned for a version of the Wildcat... As Bat or Moonbat was the USAAF version, Manta (which was the name of the Davis prototype that inspired the XP-67) seemed perfect for a naval version... and voilĂ !

An old would-be magazine clipping...

... and the "original" photograph...

Hope you like them!

There has been no comment on my McDonnell Manta... Perhaps some of you might enjoy the colored version more? So here goes:

(Sorry about the propellers... they got sort of lost in translation... LOL...)
