Study 382 was an early 60;s design for a new AA Frigate armed with the latest Sea Dart Missile system, the study 381 was an ASW optimised design. Both these types were to follow on from the Leander class and replace the late war destroyers. These are smaller dedicated units than the larger Type 82 Destroyer which was to act as primary escort to the new Carriers. The Type 382 eventually evolved into what became the Type 42 destroyer and the 381 the Type 22.

Information is from "Rebuilding the Royal Navy" by D K Brown.

Now i am really going back to my roots with this build, as many of you know i have for years been doing TSR2's along with various British Aircraft projects in 1/72. Now with fresh blood on the scene now scratch building i can finally focus back on ships and combine with my passion for projects by building Naval projects.

For this 1 week build i have really stepped out on a limb as this will be a scratch build, with only a few detail parts from the spares box to fit out the ship. The Hull and superstructure will be created by laminating together sheets of plastic card to create a block that can then be sawn, cut filed, filled, sanded and lots of PSR to produce the waterline hull.

(Hmmn i wonder if i may be pushing it this time  :banghead:)

He's gonna need it!! thats one hell of a challenge for a one week build
I always hope for the best.
Unfortunately,
experience has taught me to expect the worst.

Well thats why i decided to do it, i could have opted for a simplar corvette vessel or a stealth ship but though a proper project was worth the effort.

As i said i've not been ship modelling for a long time, but it is how i learned my scratch building skills and hopefully I should be able to get back into the saddle. I have already marked up and cut out the card so the blocks are now curring ready to start shaping tonight.

Aim will be to get the hull shaped and the superstucture block created this weekend, with an eye for doing the details and the painting by next weekend (after work).

WOW! I'm looking forward to seeing the progress during the week. :)
Look behind you!

I've always been impressed by your talent and skill, but this is definitely quite a challenge!

I can't wait until you launch this beauty!

Ok then progress update. cut out and glues the plasticard to create laminated blocks of plastic card that are then sawn roughly to shape. A quick dose of glue and filler to repair cracked seams from the swaing process
Rest of day spent carving, scraping, filing, and lots of PSR inbetween to create a basic hull form.

You may note i have actually created a 2nd hull at the same time, this is the Type 381 and was the ASW version of the design. Not e the cut out aft for the tandem Limbo motars, the VDS sonar and fwd the pit for the Ikara launcher.

A most impressive project for any time, let alone a 1-week build!
In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.

Thorvic

Well managed to get teh hulls done and started on the superstructures. Got the basic shapes created, but still need to build the more complex items such as bridges, Masts and Funnels, one those are done all thats left is the detailing.
Lost some time yesterday retrieving my collection of ship parts as these were all packed away at the bottom of the stash in the loft so will have to restack all that lot once the builds completed (Does mean i may well purge it down again as i wont be doing aircraft for a while - Anybody after a fencer ?)

Currently have both the Type 382 AA and Type 381 on the go, but if time becomes an issue then obviously i shall focus on the 382.

Hopefully will get some update pics later tonight, although the white plastic card used plays havoc with the camera flash.

Ok guys - had a couple of problems regarding the build, i discovered i didnt have all the stuff i needed in my stash  from the old days and placed an order with WEM on Monday, unfortunatly they only aknowledged the order yesterday so only a slim chance it will arrive by the weekend  :banghead:. the order contains the likes of Photo Etch for the doors, masts etc, also has the bofors and the decals required to complete the build.

As this is the first ship scratch build in many years i dont want to botch the build for the sake of coming in within the deadline.I could scratch build some of the details but these would not be as good as the etch and i do want to use these models on future SIG displays.

Therefore it shall probably be next weekend when these are completed, missing the deadline (I am building from scratch afterall)

The Type 382 has its superstructure built and is awaiting detailing and fitting out, the Type 381 has its superstructure ready to fit but really need to add some fittings before i attach it.

Cheers

Ship Whiffery!!!    :drink:

Sucks that you're getting laid up by the need for parts from WEM though   :banghead:

Still, keep up the ship whiffery, it's nice to not feel so alone half the time.

Dont worry i will be i have plenty of others planned to follow this build, and thats just RN project and real stuff.

WEM generally have a very quick turn around but at the moment part of the team are moving to the States which has slowed things down somewhat, unfortunately i didn't have everything i thought i still had in stock so had to rely on a rapid delivery to keep the build within the deadline.

Anyway the 1 week build was really the motovator i needed to prompt the switch back to ship modelling again.
