Oooh, I like your thinking Dunc.

As for the radome, a top tip that Alvis once gave was to use badges that kids get with birthday cards - I've collected several in the "junk parts" box in case I want to do an AWACS in the future.

Cheers, I'll keep that in mind.

In all honesty I haven't really thought about the markings yet  :o the plan is to get it all together then consult the EPDG (Evil Plan Disruptor General), AKA Thorvic for advice as whatever I think of he'll probably suggest something better I had overlooked.

In all likelihood it will be the same as the A-50.

Building this has made me think of a few other possibilities for the Il-86, how about an equivalent to the VC-10 Pofflers armed with stand off ALBM's used on deterrent patrols? Or something like the Project Aerie KC-135's that were proposed with radar and Eagle AAM's, or an equivalent family to the RC-135's?
Or a Soviet "Looking Glass" or NEACP aircraft based on the Illyushin....or Maritime patrol....or....oh dear!

Duncan

Moi ?

I would go with the Moss scheme as an Eighties project and thus mid-cold war.

As for Il-86, Zvedza are issuing the Il-96 as the Presidents jet, but for IL-86 how about a Tanker

Just a thought, looking at the model so far, it all looks a bit too smooth, like it could do with a few lumps and bumps, like little cable ducts, avionics cooling intakes and extraneous antennae, what do you folk's think? <...>

Yeah! Missile approach warners, SATCOM antenna, IFR probe/housing....

Yes, maybe not as prominent, but the direction is right. They have to distribute all the data they gather in some way.

Wing-tip pods as on British Sentries? Tornado-style chaff/flare and ECM pods? Maybe half a fuel tank on each cheek like the the antenna housings on the NATO Sentries (or the nose fairing)?
Cheers,
Moritz

Oh, and how about a little defensive armament, maybe a pylon under each wing for a short range IR missile? Just like Nimrod's over the South Atlantic during the Falklands War?

You mean like this?

Spey_Phantom

an AEW version of the IL-86, that looks pretty plausible.
maybe you should send a pic of the finished model over to russia, would make an interesting A-50 Mainstay replacement.

looks great up to now
on the bench:

-all kinds of things.

Mossie

How about loimps & boimps Sentinel style, smaller on top, bigger on bottom?

Dunc, I've got a sprue from the Heller C-160G Gabrielle with all sorts of SIGINT thingmytrons, you're welcome to it if you want it.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.
