Ok, I could really use some much appreciated help and replies with my next question here. Also, if anybody has some good pics and links to share, that would be especially helpful.
I really need some advice on what radars to use and how I should make the radar mast look like. I'm guessing that if the Habakkuk had been built, it would've entered anywhere between late '44 to 1946. What radars and radar systems were common back then? Just so you know, I'm building an "Americanised" Habakkuk ship here. ;)
Modeling isn't just about how good the gluing or painting, etc. looks. It's also about how creative and imaginative you can be with a subject.
My modeling philosophy is: Don't build what everyone else has done. Build instead what nobody has seen or done before.

Adios, folks. See everybody in two weeks. I've got another contest to prep for. Not sure I'll have the Habakkuk done for it, but I'll still take the model with me to show to other modelers and get extra construction advice. I'll also be sure to bring back pics from the contest to show everyone. ;)
As for my last pic till I get back, I thought I'd show a really good view for "scale reference" purposes.  :o  ;D  That's "FOUR" WWII aircraft carrier flight decks on top of the Habakkuk for scale reference. Now you know just how big a Habakkuk could've been compared to a WWII carrier. Pretty impressive, eh?  :o
All those flight decks, and the Habakkuk itself, are all 1/700 scale.

Ok, I'm sorry. I just couldn't resist coming back and posting this update. I'm at the 80% mark for having the Habakkuk done. Still more to go yet though.
The first two pics show the finished superstructure. Sorry for the blurriness. The next two pics afterwards, show the Habakkuk on the display base next to a 1/700 Essex AC that was painted black to act as a sillouette for scale reference purposes. Also on the base is a 1/700 German Uboat for scale reference since the whole Habakkuk concept back in WWII was to go after the German Uboat menace in the Atlantic. Also on the right is a small cross section of the hull that I built, which I still need to detail yet. Other details I still need to finish are lots of aircraft, A plaque and other info. for the base, and the engine pods for the hull sides of the Habakkuk........if I can ever find a way to make those.  >:(  >:(  >:(  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:

Really taking shape now with the island on, finish line is in sight!
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Truly awesome, a masterpiece of modelling.

WOW, seadude! I *REALLY* like what you did for an island! And the display with the same-scale black carrier, sub, and cross-section is just superb! One almost has SYMPATHY for the tiny sub!!
My mind is like a compost heap: both "fertile" and "rotten"!

Wow, you nailed the island!

Thanks for the compliments, guys. :)  Anything else you want to know, then just ask. ;) Estimated completion time for the entire modeling project is probably early or mid June.

One thing I've been wondering, how much does it weigh?

It must be getting on for that of various R/C boats I've made!

Excellent - it's looking really good now, the island in particular.

QuoteOne thing I've been wondering, how much does it weigh?

An actual Habakkuk if built would've weighed approx. 2.2 million tonnes or more. As for my model, I haven't weighed it at all. Maybe I will sometime just for curiosity. ;) I can tell you that the entire hull is solid wood and is not hollow.

As written in Post # 286 earlier, I wanted to take my Habakkuk to a contest to display and get further construction advice, but not to enter it as it was only maybe 80-90% done at the time since I still had aircraft, engine pods, and a few other details to finish.
Well, I took it to the contest today and the organiser of the event "pestered" me to enter it........which I finally did, because he liked it so much and thought it looked good the way it was. The contest was unfortuneately small and there wasn't much of a turnout. :( In fact, I'd have to say that EVERY model got an award of some kind. Biggest catagory there had to be the Figures catagory.
So here's my pics from that contest:

Going left to right, I won the following:
Best of Show trophy. :)
1st Place for US Navy theme.
1st Place for the "Novice Ordinance" catagory.
