My favourite version of CVA 01 is the drawing in the 1963/4 Janes
of the angle deck version with two Cf299 and carrying the proposed
fighter/attacker swing wing vstol.  The tailless Vickers 581 is
closest to the planes drawn.  It is this drawing which launched
countless efforts in my schooldays to design warships.

You found the Janes picture. Isnt she a beauty. The plan in Brown/Moore
of the CVA 01 angle deck version is of the same vintage.

Hope you will be on the mend soon.

I agree with your build of the recognisable version of the CH design.  I have
never managed to get to the NAO but a friend of mine tells me that the drawings
of ships are often not on file so that may explain why Brown/Moore and other
sources do not have the definitive 1962 design quoted.  I still think this must have
had the same stern config as the CVA 01 (2 Seadarts and 1 Ikara) but forward
would have resembled the 1966 Working Party CH design.  Guess we will never
know.

I have been trying for years to get info from the National Maritime Museum about
their ex-MOD model of the nuclear replenishment ship (yes they have it listed)
but noone seems to know where it is. I suspect the word "nuclear" means they
are cautious about letting it out.

Of this I must know more! I thought my AOEN was an original idea, but may the RN have beaten me to it?

In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.

Did the UK consider nuclear-powered surface combatants as well, or just the replenishment ship?

RLBH

There were certainly studies of the Type 82 and Type 43 with nuclear power, and I expect the idea was looked at for the CVA-01 project. By and large, though, most RN ships have been too small for a nuclear powerplant to be viable.

A number of sources on the modern Royal Navy (Eric Grove and Desmond
Wettern) refer to the fleet replenishment ship project as being a candidate
for a UK nuclear ship  (in the early 60s US, Germany and Japan all built
test ships with not very good results).

I found some years ago and keep trying to find again, an article in the
Airfix magazine between 1961 and 1964 or so by the UK Atomic Energy
Authority showing designs for reactors for merchant ships, as well
as ships suitable for fitting.  The results looked pretty much like the
US Savannah.  I suppose the RFA would have looked similar.

Another category of ship that is hard to track down is the ship planned
to carry the missiles (Blue Envoy etc) that were considered between
Seaslug and CF299 (Seadart).  I suspect that size of missiles would have
forced the system to be fitted to a carrier because of the power needed.
The UK had got out of the missile cruiser business except for the escort
cruiser, and this was too cramped for the large missile.  The UK might also
have put Typhons on a carrier if the USN had been able to make the system
work.  In fact an RN nuclear destroyer copy of the Typhon ship shown in
Janes in 1962/3 might have been a runner.

It's a warship, leave it in primer & no-one will notice! ;D  Seriously Geoff, I'm impressed, especially with the little scratchbuilt P.139 & crane.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Looking good, Thorvic. I especially like the vehicle on the deck which offers a nice contrast to the aircraft.

She is coming along quite well, looking forward to seeing her progress.  I hope you can get a supply of Buccs and stuff to put on the deck to make it nice and clearly British.
