I hesitated to post this here, because I couldn't find any back-up for the Wikipedia article (ie, no citation) but there's a note in the article about the Browning M1919 which says that a number of modernized guns, chambered for 7.62mm NATO, are slated for deployment with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2011.

Sounds dubious at best, however cleaning up and reissuing any of the 7.62 versions that may be in
storage could be a relatively cheap way to equip Iraqi and Afghan police/militia units.

Curiosity from me: are all M1 Garands on the market military surplus?  Does anyone still make, say, new barrels for the Garand?  Replica?  Match-grade?

Given the size of the American gun market and their affection for the Garand, I'd be surprised if you couldn't build an entire gun from improved aftermarket parts....

Interesting...... this one seems to provide barrels with chromed bore and chamber, scope mounts (in both normal and scout setups) requiring no gunsmithing, even a setup that would chamber .308 cartridge......

It looks like a variant of the M21 sniper rifle, which is based on the M14:

My take on my own question:

Now that I browsed around some more, it looks a bit like the M14/M1A RAS produced by Knight Armament Company.

Also, the cheek piece doesn't seem to be a permanent fixture, either.  Maybe the rifle just had its stock re-painted.

The cheek piece looks like its a slip-on type with a strap round the butt pad and three Velcro straps under neither the stock securing it.

If someone decides to take a lever action rifle for tactical use, what's the first role you would imagine the gun to be used for?

I just got curious about it and decided to do an internet browsing...... some interesting stuff here- look at Post #6.

Does anyone here have experience with Winchester Model 88 and SAKO Finnwolf?  I found them interesting in that they use box magazines instead of tubular ones, allowing the use of modern "pointed tip" rifle cartridges, and am wondering how they compare against bolt-action guns.

I suggested level actions a while ago on another forum as PDWs for non-rifle-shooting personnel. They're more accurate than an SMG, light, easy to carry and need much less maintenance than a gas-op. You could adopt a box magazine, but in my "ultimate" version it used cased telescopic ammo (sub-calibre flechettes held within the cartridge case) with blunt noses, so the tube mag was still on.
