No they wern't. All the flying shots were done with two T.1s and an S.211, but there was a single-seat Ajeet in some of the ground shots. See here:

I for one would find it quite funny, but then again, as a 'para' and full time 'chair user', I'm allowed! 
Although, making a wheelchair and chair lift in 1/72 for the diorama would be a challenge !

Unfortunately "thin skinned and devoid of humour" is not a good definition of "nearly nobody" these days. I could see some outraged SJW demanding not only that the model be destroyed, but that all copies of the film should be gathered up and burnt as well.
