Well, it's the time of the year when a Victorian year eleven media teacher's thoughts turn to special effects (teaching about the impact of technology on the movie industry), and so I've decided to have a shot at making some with my class. Therefore, I've been building a very quick and dirty filming miniature. It's really fast because I only have to detail those parts the camera will see. I've spent about four hours total on it I guess (a lot of that being staring at it and thinking about what detail to add where). I'll be starting to paint over the weekend, and I'll get some film of it as soon as one of my Year 12 students returns the video camera they've borrowed to film thier massive assessment projects (even had to lend out my personal camera this year...)

Who is this Melies dude?
Look upon his works ye mighty and dissapear!

Weep quietly into thier beers and then go and invent tanks I guess. I tried to work som aircraft parts in, but I'd already put a lot of detail on when I found them, so there was no space...

All film footage will be shot using better lights, no camera flash, and careful framing to hide my kitchen...

Will your Méliès have a crew of gossamer draped space women? ;)

Yep. And they will dissapear in puffs of smoke, play all the parts in an orchestra simultaneously, and inflate thier heads with bike pumps until they explode.

Won't that make the insides of the ship a tad messy??

Nah, they turn into confetti or smoke at that point. Have you not watched any of Melies' trick films?

About six hours all told including staring and thinking time. Only one side is detailed and painted cause the camera never sees the other.

We don't just embrace insanity here.  We feel it up, french kiss it and then buy it a drink.

Absolutely astonishing modelling, PW! Utterly convincing and the paintwork is most impressive!
