The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month so we're co-hosting a free virtual model contest. More details are available on my blog's website http://hawkeyes-squawkbox.com/ This contest is right up the alley for all you What If'rs!

The only rule...it has to be at least 50% PINK! You can't win if you don't enter...the Grand Prize is looking pretty good and could possibly even get better!

Not that I want to rain on anyone's parade, but there's a few questions I can't ignore:

Why is the 'save the boobies' campaign such a big deal, vastly more so than other forms of cancer?

And what is the predominantly male scale modelers community doing, creating awareness among people who aren't affected by this particular type of cancer (1)?

1: other than via family, friends or whatnot.

Several reasons. Firstly, it's one of the most common causes of cancer. Lung Cancer, the biggest killer, has an image problem because of it's link to smoking (which isn't always the cause). Colorectal cancer is close (may be more prevalent, depending where in the world you are), but is more difficult to diagnose. Breast Cancer is a big killer, but it's fairly easily picked up & preventable. This sounds like a reason for a being down the list on research, but because of this, more lives are saved. There's still a knock on effect from some years back, when Breast Cancer mortality rates were higher, but they've still got a way to go yet. Oh, & as a bloke, it doesn't mean you can't get breast cancer. Much less likely, but you can get it.

Of the male cancers, prostatic cancer is the most likely to get you. IIRC, testicular cancer is more prevalent (especially in younger men), but is much more treatable. There's been more foucs on testicular cancer in the last ten years or so, again, because it's more easily picked up & prevented.

The save the ta ta's is a campaigned aimed at the younger crowd, crude but they are hoping it works only time will tell. Breast cancer touches many families whether immediate or extended. My mother is a breast cancer survivor and recently a scare went through the family as it was initially diagnosed in one of my cousins. Fortunately because of awareness programs it was caught and treated very early with no ill effects other than her being scared to death.

Do it for all of the women in your life! THINK PINK!

Having lost a girlfriend to breast cancer, I'd be only to pleased to try to participate, although time is hard to find at the moment.

As to why blokes should be interested, think of it this way: save two of your hobbies with one of your other hobbies......

so no Balao class pink submarines named SEATIGER- TYPHOON CLASS, OHIO-CLASS, LOS ANGELES CLASS, etc would be okay since that would be a nicely warped update (I want to see the story why they couldn't find any black paint.

no pink FV-101 Scorpions (I have seen one in the news. Apparently in Europe there is one that is regularly used in some sort of gay rights parades). Now an ABRAMS, T-90, or LeClerc would be cool.

Springsteen sings about a "Pink Cadillac". Has there been a Pink Jaguar, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce, Trabi, Ferrari?

Not seen that one. There was an Abbot SPG used in a gay rights parade a few years ago. It's owned by the same outfit that do the Tank Limo, and was specially painted for the occasion, and then re-painted afterwards.

The story is actually quite funny. Amnesty International first booked the Abbot (in regular paint) to deliver a petition about the arms trade to various embassies around London, attraction photographers and press attention in the process. There were a few lesbians involved with that, who then asked the owner if he could paint it pink and bring it on the gay rights march. He was game, but the problem was persuading his very macho crew to take part.

His solution was simple: he lied to them. He told them they were painting it pink for a Revlon nail polish TV commercial, and they only gradually realised when they rolled up at the appointed place and time and all these folk with gay rights banners started congregating around them.

"Errr.... didn't quite tell you the truth lads....."

The funny thing was that, despite their initial reservations, they had a whale of a time, in no small part due to the number of pretty lesbians who wanted to be photographed sitting astride the gun barrel. They did get him back though - details not revealed........

I've at least two pink projects I've been thinking of for some time. A desert pink A-7 two seater & a ride for the SAS as an alternative to their Pink Panther Landies.

It's been used since for breast cancer awareness too.

They parodied this in Ashes to Ashes, Keeley Hawes rode a pink FV432 with the Fox turret. Those who like girls with guns might like the third pic in this link:
