The U.S Marines were in need of a STOL transport aircraft that was smaller than the Hercules, powered by current use turbo prop engines (as used on the Grumman Hawkeye, and have parts commonality with several other current Marine/Navy aircraft. After looking at several available aircraft, and not finding anything suitable, an aircraft engineer in the Marine corps, put forward his idea.
The idea was to use the fuselage and landing gear from a V-22,an graft on the wings and engines of the Grumman Hawkeye. This idea when drawn up and looked into in detail aroused great interest from the powers that be, and a mock up was ordered. The fuselage came from Boeing, as it was sat in storage, and the wings and engines/props came from a Hawkeye that was sat in Davis Monthan awaiting its fate.
The standard V-22 tail could not be used as could not the Hawkeye tail so new high T tail was designed and fitted.
Here is the prototype aircraft, which apart from some avionic modifications is very close to final production specification.

The fixed wings and engines look interesting on the Osprey I have to say. It changes the look quite a bit.

Very interesting. Think i would do it with a 1/100 or 1/144 C-130 tail assembly or the Osprey tail instead, or perhaps even the tail for a Viking. Whats up next for the Osprey? We've seen the gunship, the AWACS, cargo and flying boat. How about an ordinary helicopter, with CH-53, NH-90 or Mi-17 bits? Maritime patrol?

Yeah, the wing set up come out a lot better than I envisaged, I just need to find some clear parts for the wing tips to finish them off. My Marine aircraft contingent was and still is lacking in the transport aircraft department, so the Hobbycrap V-22 in the stash got dragged out and mashed up with a Hawkeye that was in the boneyard.
Cheers,
Chris.

Nice one Chris: looks good!

Done me a favour too: I've got two sets of those wings in a box of random bits, and I couldn't ID them until now!   ;D

I think, personally, if we're thinking revised tails, I would have put the E-2 tail on there if I had one - the wide, flat top just begs to have that three and a half tail setup in place.

When I was building the plane, I was in two minds about the tail, but the more I look at it, the more I like it as I like the look of T tails.

Interesting and original concept! I too would have gone for a Mohawk or Hawkeye tail, but after all, it's your project!!! ;D

That looks really good, although tail looks wonky in 3rd pic down ????

That's probably cos it is Nev
I had to use superglue to get it to stay put, and after I had sat for what felt like forever holding the thing "straight"? it had slouched a bit. I will attempt to straighten it some more, hopefully without destroying the thing
