I'm converting an old 1/72 Revell Me-410 into a torpedo bomber for the Graf Zeppelin a/c carrier.  I intend to fold the wings and will probably have to scratch build a torpedo.  I will get some photos as soon as I can borrow back my wife's digital camera from my son.  How much work I can get done between now and Xmas may be a problem.  The real world keeps me busy this time of year.  But at least I will have January to work on it.

Here's what I'm starting with.  Sorry for the poor photo quality, this was a quick shot with the cell phone.  I'm ready to start cutting the wings so that I can fold them.

Should be interesting, Ed - I've got a 110G I'm going to re-engine and turn into a Torp Bomber at some point, though not navalized.

Hey nice plan.

I will scratch mine now was thinking the same sort of thing for this GB. Re-evaluation time, plenty of other fodder around

interested to see how it comes out

Interesting idea Ed, look forward to seeing you work your magic.

Cool idea.....many years ago I had an idea for a WW2 naval airwing on a proposed carrier (Adolf Hitler....corny I know).....I had FW190D9's as fighter element,a Fiesler Storch as a sort of obs/captains plane,Ar 196 A3 scout/light attack/rescue plane,Ju 87D5/G as dive bomber and the Me410 as attack/torpedo bomber. The only one I got round to starting was the Me410...wings cut along a panel line between flap/aileron assembled with wing fold mechanism....cockpit detailed n assembled....I was going to paint it in various grey/blue scheme with a squiggle/wellenmuster pattern as with the other aircraft.....had always intended to do a deck scene....bought/made the quad 20mm n single 37mm flak guns that would be situated on the side of the deck like the American carriers...all packed awaiting house move otherwise I would have posted a pics of the (years old) progress.

Nice old kit that is. I think I might still have mine knocing around somewhere.  Looking forward to seeing the progreee on this one. I'll be especially interested in how you do the wing fold as I've a couple of ideas bouncing around that I might want as naval machines

Is the Revell Me410 the old FROG Me410 reboxed?  ;D ;D

Yes and it's a pretty woolly kit - I built one years back.  Better off with a Matchbox one as it captures the look of the 410 better.  The Frog one is more of a caricature, although if the engines were replaced it would be a big improvement.  BMW 801 radials?

What will you do with the wings after cutting them?  As far as the method of wing fold that you are going to portray?  Have you decided to go with the wings folded over the top to obscure the canopy like the Corsair or with the wings folded parallel to the fuselage like the Avenger?  Wolfik posted some images of a Ju-87 in this discussion board a couple of years ago with the wings folded up in the Grumman Avenger style parallel to the fuselage that looked pretty good.

I'm putting the wing fold outboard of the radiators, even with the edge of the ailerons.  This should work to fold them straight up like most naval fighters.

I haven't had much time to work on this one.  The real world keeps interfering with my time.  Anyway, here is a shot of the wings.  I have cut off the outer portion and added bulkheads to the two pieces.  I have yet to make the hinges and make openings in the bulkheads for wiring and plumbing to run through them.

Cool project Ed.
Here are some "real world" references that may be of assistance;
two photos of an Me 410 A-1used to test the Fredensengel glide-torpedo system (an extension of earlier Italian work BTW),
and a centreline arrangement drawing of the unbuilt Me 410B-5 torpedo bomber showing the mounting position.

Cheers, Jon

Ed S

Thanks, Jon.

Those aren't too different from what I've been planning.  Except, I'm not using a gliding torpedo.
