That is neat! It almost doesn't look like a Defiant with that three tone colour scheme. 

  I did the same double-take / derppp.... Almost thought it was a early version Fisher XP-75 for the US Navy- at first

After numerous delays with the Rafale, Dassault, pushed by the French governement, studied an "interim" solution to replace the older Mirage F1 and Mirage 2000. After long hesitations, Dassault provided to the French Air Force an hybrid plane, using a Mirage 2000 airframe with the Rafale's combat system.

Dassault kept the Mirage 2000B airframe but removed the vertical stab, replacing it by a Rafale-type stab, added canards in place of the "moustaches" and put a Snecma M53 derivative, the M53-X (rated at 70 kN dry and 101 kN with afterburner)

All the RDI electronic components were removed and a new electronic suite was installed, consisting of the RDY-3 AESA radar, SPECTRA integrated self-protection system and OSF electro-optical system.

The first deliveries of the plane, renamed Mirage 2000S (for Special) took place in February 2003 and the first squadron (EC 1/12 Cambresis) was operationnal in 2004. The aircraft displayed is the s/n 702, delivered to the newly recreated EC 1/10 Valois, based at BA 110 Creil. The squadron was responsible for the "Police du Ciel" missions over the Paris area.
