Check out these 2 shots of LCS-1 getting some gas from LHD-6.

Now look closely at the flight deck, right in front of the forward part of the superstructure of LHD-6.

Anyone know what that pair of TF-104s in Russian camo are doing on the ship?  I "think" they're TF-104s, anyone care to clarify?

Amphion

They look more like a pair of Aero L-29 DelfĂn to me.

Compare to this:

Yeah, I'd go Delfins too.  Looks like the black/yellow one is a single seater?

Still begs to question, WTF are they doing there?

My guess is they are catching a ride for an airshow/exhibition as part of the RIMPAC exercise.  Probably will be craned off; but to see them take off from the ship would be very interesting!  Bet they could do it with a light load and a good wind.

Most interesting find!  :o Posted this over on ARC as well.

saw an L-29 fly wing on a T-6 Harvard at this year's ILA in Berlin. They should have some good low-speed handling. On take-off, the L-29 accelerated faster, but apparently the L-29 has the same approach speed as the T-6.  ;D

Apparently, the two L-29s belong to TacAir (LINKY!) and are used as adversaries. So it's a good possibility they're carried along for the RIMPAC exercises. HERE'S a nice pic of the camouflage one and HERE'S a neat pic of the black and yellow one.
TacAir is also the company that imported two Su-27s for use as adversaries, but the deal fell through in the end (AFAIK, that is).

In the same vein, here's a neat pic of an L-39 Albatros operated in the same way, staging an attack on a Dutch frigate.

Cheers,
Moritz

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Regarding the L-29s on Bonnie Dick:

NAVY.MIL PRESS RELEASE (.pdf) (thanks to "Corsair" on Flugzeugforum for linking to it!)

The L-29s are carried along to be used in RIMPAC 2010. They will fly attack patterns of air-to-surface missiles.
Cheers,
Moritz
