According to Tony Buttler, BSP Jet Bombers, Avro promised an "unequalled
combination of flying qualities" and that the 727 could "switch to the fighter
role after delivering it ground ordnance".
Maybe the 727 was seen as an easy way to enter the NATO competition for
a light ground attacker ?

But ... what do you think? would it need canard? or a redesign of wing leading edge, à la avro vulcan?

Collecting info for this scratch building:

Fuselage from a Fiat G-91 need a different nose probably from a Phantom
Wings from a Mirage III (perfect shape). The leading edge à la Vulcan really appeals me.
Air intakes from a Hawk
Some mods taken from UK jaguar

A would appreciate your comments

At a first approximation, I'd guess that the leading edge changes applied to the Vulcan might well apply to this aircraft, too.  Beyond that, it look like an attactive little plane.  Perhaps it could serve as an adjunct to Hunters, later Harriers, for ground attack?  I don't see it necessarily equipped for the air-to-air role.

You are right. Perhaps a pair of sidewinder for self defense. No more.

It had an absolutely ENORMOUS wing for it's size and weight, so it should have been very agile, and it was intended for air-to-air or air-to-ground work with Sidewinders, rockets or bombs.

I started, but have stalled on, an "Avro Atom" for Patchwork World, which is inspired by the 727 but not a direct copy of it. It uses a Gnat fuselage and MiG-21 wings: http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,21511.0.html
