What are the rules/guidelines for posting pics/links?

I'm curioua about the following. For a long time, I have enjoyed building models and taking them to contests. But only recently in the last 2 years have I started to collect information and pictures on the Net about the subjects I build and put all that together into 3-ring binders to sit next to the model on the table so that other modelers can view the history, specifications, diagrams, etc. of the projects I build.

But the thing is, If I am "borrowing" pics from the Net that I find on other sites and I print them and then put them in my binder for people to view, then do I still need to list where the pics came from and give credit where credit is due? I'm not selling the pics nor making extra copies of the binder to pass out.

Also, I tend to "save" (Right click, then Save Image As.) various pics I find on the Net to my comp and/or photo album. The reason for this is that I often worry that the pics and/or site that the pics were on, may be gone or lost in the future. After all, websites DO have technical difficulties from time to time and information can get lost. I like to think that I'm "preserving" the pics I find.
And if I save pics from another site on my comp and/or my online photo album, Do I still have to mention (Either in my photo album or on the other site/forum I post to) where the original site is that the pics came from if I show my album pics on other forums/sites?

What constitutes "fair use"?
Modeling isn't just about how good the gluing or painting, etc. looks. It's also about how creative and imaginative you can be with a subject.
My modeling philosophy is: Don't build what everyone else has done. Build instead what nobody has seen or done before.

Anytime you display a picture that is not yours, you should give some type of credit to the original photographer.  At least a notation that it is not yours.  Now, if you are saving pictures to your computer to use for reference, etc, you obviously don't need to give credit but if you save them to a public album, you should.  Just my 2 cents.

What Phil said.  To add to that, we tend to not post links to pics on Airliners.net, but rather provide links.

Most everything else, like Phil said, just post a "from xxxxxxxxx.com" in your notation, and link it.  Though try to keep posted pic sizes "normal" size, if you can, since we have a lot of dial up members.  If in doubt to the original pic's size, just post a direct link and not embed the pic in your post.

I would say a decent sized disclaimer at the front of the book stating that the following images have been gathered from around the web and belong to various individuals should be fine. It's not as easy as it sounds to keep track of all of the images saved for reference.

It's also a good idea from the other end to either watermark or add your info to the edge of your photos before posting them to the net, so if they get borrowed, they will still be identifiable as yours.

If you print the images and only use them for private use, you don't have to. If it is from wikipedia, you can use it no matter what.
