Can any ship modellers tell me if there is such thing as a model of the Whidby Island class LSD's, especially the USS Gunston Hall?  I'm not too worried about scale, although 1/700-ish would probably work best & I guess I'm looking at white metal or resin as a web search doesn't bring anything up.

Thanks for looking!

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

I hate to say it, but I'm not sure anyone makes her.

I hunted around for a while, and I found a nice scratchbuild here:

http://www.steelnavy.com/PortlandLSDBLegaspi.htm
http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery/am/lsd-53/700-bl/lsd53-index.html

(Same ship/mopdel, seperate sites)

But that's all I can find.  Hopefully someone else will be able to point you better.

Ships & Co were supposed to be doing one in resin, as imgaes of the test shot have been seen on-line, but it failed to appear last year.

The landing ships always seem to be poorly covered, only Airfix have done the one in plastic, and JAG did the US classes from the 70's & 80's but none of the newer ones.

The new San Antonia class appear to have been done as a display model in metal however.

Thanks guys!

Proditor, thanks for the links, not sure if I could attempt a scratch build!

Geoff, I've found the pics of the Whidby Island, I'll keep hoping it's released, although it'll probably be too dear for me.

Dan, thanks for the link, there wasn't anything there, but cheers anyway!

Writing from a postion of total ignorance here  (what else is new...?) how about backdating an Airfix 'Fearless'? They look remarkably similar, and I'm sure the Fearless clas was based on a US design in the first place.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Geoff, you are a Gentleman!  I might even be able to do it myself, with a wee nudge in the right direction.  I'll have a look & see what I can find regarding plans.

All the very best mate,

I have another request.  Does anybody have 'U.S. Amphibious Ships and Craft: An Illustrated Design History' by Norman Freidman.  Apparently this book plans of the USS Whideby Island in it?  If anyone has this, & it has the plans, I'd be vey grateful if they could scan them & PM them to me!

I'm asking a lot of you guys, thank you again!

You sound like my mother comparing a grey F-16 to a grey F-4  ;D Fearless was the older of the two

JAG has 1/700 models of the Anchorage class, Raliegh class, USS Cimarron, USS Newport, USS Austin and Sacramento, if you are just looking for similar ships:

http://jagcollective.com/Ships_catalog.htm

According to this site, the Whidby class is based on the Anchorage class

Thanks guys!

Kit, the two ships are quite different when you look closely, the hulls are different shapes & the superstructures are very different.  It might well be worth me getting a kit of the Airfix HMS Fearless to use parts from it, although it's 1/600 & I'd probably be able to fit it better from other 1/700 models & bits available from White Ensign & others.  I'm not a ship modeller myself & this is new to me, although I've had a passing interest in ships & it's maybe time I stepped things up a bit.

Thomas, it's the Whidbey Island class, & specifically the USS Gunston Hall I'm after.  I'm not sure how close the hulls of he Anchorage class & Whidbey Island are to one another without scale plans, a quick look shows beam to be very similar, but length is different.  The etched fret might be very useful, especially in trying to recreate the cranes & might give JAG an e-mail to see if I can get hold of them.  I'm trying to get onto White Ensign Models web page but every time I've tried to access it it crashes my browser. :banghead:

A Tamiya JMSDF Ohsumi or Shimokita LST might make a better basis than a resin kit of over twice the price. It has the well deck for the LCAC (and includes a pair of LCAC), and being a plastic kit will be easier to modify although not sure on the dimension suitability.

Simon.

I've got it, but don't have access to a working scanner (yet).  I'll probably get one hooked up later today.
