The concept has been around since Flash Gordon in the 1930's, at least.

People/artists just put their own interpretation on the idea.

You can do all sorts of things with a pair of U-2 wings......  ;)
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model
