High Over The Reich

With the advent of the Vickers Windsor high altitude heavy bomber the RAF was looking at inaugurating high level day light raids over Germany in the Spring of 1946. In order to provide escorts for these raids those squadrons flying Mustang IV's, mainly based in the Italian and Levant theatres, were withdrawn to the UK for retraining in the high altitude long range escort role. The Mustangs were used until sufficient DH Hornets became available for the role in early 1947.

This Mustang IV of 124 Squadron is representative of the type.

The kit is the delightful Tamiya 1/72 version. Paints are mainly Xtracrylic with the markings coming from a CMR Spitfire VIII (ON-W was flown by Flg Of Walter Hibbert in 1944). The serial number is from a Techmod RAF Mustang sheet.

I thoroughly enjoyed this build.

Dasmm, but the scheme really does fit the Mustang really well. As Harro said, much better than the NMF finish usuall seen on them. Nice one Chris.
