An idea I've kicked around for the last few years is for a non-Nazi 1930s German Confederation* with air force units from the various states.
All the aircraft would carry the same black-cross national marking with a fin flash based on the old Imperial Army state colour kokardes.

*The basic outline is that Wilhelm dies at birth and that his father does not die at an early age due to throat cancer.
With the reform minded, peace inclined, and mentally stable Frederick III on the throne German history takes a differnt
path and the Empire becomes a liberal democracy organized as a proper constitutional monarchy. This doesn't mean all
is Peace and Love as war still breaks out in the second and fifth decades of the 20th century, roughly at the same time as WWI
and WWII. In this WWI the German Confederation and the British Empire are allied against a resurgent French Empire that
has made common cause with an increasingly xenophobic Russian Empire. France and Russia are defeated but return as
a threat in the 1930s, France as a militant nationalist dictatorship and, following a long and bloody civil war that parallels OTL
, Russia ends up controlled by a radical alliance of nationalists and churchmen who used the illusion of social reform, the
organizational tools of the socialists, sentimental claptrap about the Rodina and good old-fashioned anti-Semitism to undermine
the Bolsheviks.  The Tsar is gone for good and he has been replaced by The Leader, a former seminary student and priest from
Georgia named Dzhugashvilli. 
The dictatorships want revenge and to regain territory, again they go to war with Germany and Great Britain.

In terms of war machinery, basically everything is the same as OTL.

Wow that's an excellent alt. history there Mr Carrfarrelly! Those cockards will wake some nice rudder stripes/fin flashes and should look nice paired with German crosses.
