So Corsair III then.

The Corsair name was only used on Vought products, originally by the company and informally by
the USN, the F4U being the first to be officially named Corsair and while Vought is a parts supplier
it had bupkus to do with designing the F-35 so neither LM nor the USAF (who ultimately control naming)
would be inclined to approve it, even if so requested by the USN/USMC.

The wings from the Modelsvit 1/72 Mig-21I/1 and Mig-21I/2 along with BAC.221 Akatombo on a Lightning would look great. <...>

I did something along the lines of that last year:

The idea was to use the wings of a Revell 1/200 Concorde snap-fit kit on a 1/72 Lightning fuselage. I suppose the folks who have to have everything a bit bigger could use 1/144 Concorde wings on a 1/48 Lightning fuselage.

Just saw this and was reminded that I've got two kits now that I didn't have when it was posted. I can therefore confirm that the wings from the Heller 1/300th Concorde are a perfect fit on the Tamiya 1/100th Lightning.

Gatwick Aviation Museum have a good page on Lighting F.53 weapons options: http://www.gatwick-aviation-museum.co.uk/lightning/wepons.htm

Could you have mounted over wing Sidewinders in combination with the fuselage mounted Firestreak/Redtop, or were the Sidewinders a direct replacement.

If it's a daft question I apologise.
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

No, it isn't daft.  The Lightning like all jet fighters is subject to drag rules.  It is why when they changed from Firestreak to Redtop the fin got bigger and they added the two fins under the fuselage.   The Redtop created excessive drag and a loss of direction from the tail.   I suspect adding a multiple Sidewinder installation was possible where the Firestreaks/Redtops were normally carried without too many problems.  There shouldn't be too many problems with an over wing mount either.  It appears BAC was interested in the lower nose, as well as an over wing mount.   Personally, I'd have preferred the overwing mount along with a pair of Redtops on the nose.  That way you'd have a longer-range weapon with some shorter-range missiles and multiple shots.

That first charcoal-sketch looks more like overwing Magics; notice the configuration of the forward fins.

Which is interesting as Oman used Magic on the Jaguar's overwing rails.

I suppose one could invoke artistic license, but why go to the trouble of those fins when Sidewinder is much simpler?

I saw something similar over on secret projects whif section but thought they'd slightly overdone it in some areas (side and nose intakes) but missed an opportunity on swapping pits. I haven't done any scale checking, this is just eyeballed and constructed on my phone (so no apologies for lack of finesse).

I am tempted to try it in plastic perhaps at 1:144 so it's less expensive and mistakes aren't as obvious... also think I might try single fin and add the EE's spine from cockpit.

Thoughts?

Edit: turns out that LM's and EE's Lightning's have pretty similar external dimensions so this might be a goer!

Or we could say NASA contracted out testing on scaled down Space Shuttle wings..... Or bought/traded for a Lightning to convert.
