Just a random thought - Did EE ever try to do a Lightning ZELL for point defense interceptor?

Dont think so. I doubt they would have needed to. The old girl could leap off the runway in prety short order and was well known for sitting on its back side once airborne and climbing like a home sick angel with its rear on fire
I always hope for the best.
Unfortunately,
experience has taught me to expect the worst.

A rocket pack was designed, not for ZELL but for increasing interception speed.  It was a Napier Double Scorpion and would have been housed in the belly pack.  Might make a good basis for a ZELL.

There was a Triple Scorpion too, that'd give some hefty boost:

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

That would be another interesting conversion for Colin to do.  I've a resin small tank mould, I've just not figured out how to do the rockets yet, although reworked bombs could be useful.

Thinking of applying it to a P8, which would mean it could meet another part of the spec.

Short lengths of styrene tube chopped into the back of the tank and PSR'd to death?
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

I've looked at some spare Sabrinas, but they didn't look quite right.  I can have a play with a spare casting or two.

Hello,
If I may suggest: the spin off from that Ligthning, where a low-set air intake (similar to what F8 Crusader had) feeds the lower engine, and the wing intakes feed the upper engine?

Dizzyfugu

Nice idea - but then I's suggest F-105 wings with their supersonic intakes for the upper engine. Even the Thunderchief's stalky landing gear might be taken over wholesale!

Excellent idea all along.

Another thing - short and strong main undercarriage that retracts in the belly pod? Main user being the FAA's Lightning...
