As the allies advanced they took over the existing facilities the enemy left behind. If they were in too bad of shape they used what ever resources they could find. Corrugated metal both flat and the curved quonset hut type buildings were erected. During warm weather they used the large general purpose tents as roofs set atop revetments made from dirt/sand filled crates and boxes. Improvise, adapt and get the job done. As these bases become more rear area, the hangers were upgraded to more permanent such as hardened concrete ones, which served through out the Cold War and some probably exist still.

The far forward the base location the less they had. Think more of a shelter than a full fledged hanger. In the books I've been reading, ground crews were lucky if they even slept under a canvas roof let alone work under one. If they did, it was draped over the aircraft to help keep the worklights from being seen at any distance. American ground crews took a lesson from the Native Americans, several poles tied together at one end, the base spread out to form a pyramid covered with canvas to make a tepee tent. They were warm and offered good protection from the wind. If the legs were robust enough, they could support a small winch to lift heavy engines/components.

Its not the workbench that makes the model, it is the modeler at the workbench.
