I was playing Google tag, you know, you start searching for one thing, then click through links until you're onto something completely different?

I began at the x-planes blog, which ran a piece last week about a modeler who scratchbuilt an aircraft from the sole existing photo (in this case, the Nakajima B4N, an experimental torpedo plane from the 30s).  From there I bounced over to HS for the original story and photos.  I wondered if there were any more photos unearthed since the posting of that model.  No joy, but in the course of my searches I ran across a listing of real and fictional Japanese military aircraft, and that in turn led me here:

I give you the De Havilland Gadfly:

This cannot have been a real aircraft, right?

A beautiful whif that I saw some time ago.  There's certainly a bunch of oddities there to be sure.

I don't know how to say this...but....it's brilliant!  :o

Why does this thing make me want to build one?

So, Vampire booms and tail (wings too?).  Drawing looks like a Hurricane forward fuselage mounted backwards but what canopy and is the nose from anything?

Float version looks like a late Spit nose.

Phil, I actually think the wings are Mosquitoes.  The inner sections especially look like it.

The canopy is familiar from somewhere but I just can't place it, as for the nose... who knows...?

The spinner is too pointed for a Hurricane tho.

Well the canopy looks P-38 ish to me (it's not but it has a feel) and the nose glazing looks as though it's inspired by a De Scheldt S-21, although again it's not exactly the same, or the Sturgeon TT ?
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I don't know Joe.  Chris is right about the late Spit look on the float equipped version and I notice that although it looks like a 5 blader, the spinner looks identical so I'm thinking it's a bit of artistic licence with regards to the spinner.

so who's going to model it ? (i def like the float version in the link, He115 type floats ?) i agree that the float one does look like its Griffon engined, very cool concept indeed, sortv a nicer looking 'Fleet Shadower'

Could the front cockpit be taken from a Short S.C.1 ?

Maverick

I dunno Joe.  The Fleet Shadower types were cute in an ugly sorta way.

Stephane, I agree, the cockpit has got an SC.1 look to it.

I think the nose turret is cut down from a B-17 dorsal turret.
