I thought that I would bring up this little bit of insanity (or genius) as a possible source of wiffery. The single bladed Gyroptere of 1914.

lots of piccies and info from these two websites
http://modelbox.free.fr/photoscopes/Papin_Phot/index.html (more info but in french)
http://www.aviastar.org/helicopters_eng/papin.php (old faithful aviastar in english)

I have been imagining them being used as replacements for observation balloons for scouting, arty spotting and maybe even early naval aviation. Possibly also as early point defence for high value targets like balloon sheds and HQs. Maybe sporting a pair of mgs on a scarf ring?

Imagine a force of aircraft flying along when suddenly a swarm of these things 'flutter' up into the air towards them!

Enjoy :)
