What if building some of these in 1/700 styrene?

Lets begin...

USS Montana: take 2 Fujimi Iowa class models (cheap kit). Prune 2nd turret, with base, and graft it in the other model as the 3rd turret.

HMS Incomparable: this would involve a Tamiya 1/700 Hood or an Italeri/Testors 1/720 (hull must be elongued), and an Airfix 1/600 Hood to take 3 turrets. This project needs more study.

HMS Lion: Take King George V and a Nelson, both from Tamiya, and put Nelson's turrets in KGV. This project needs more study.

German H-class Battleship: in the same way as Hood, would involve a 1/700 and an 1/600 Airfix or 1/570 Revell to take turrets and hull. This project needs more study.

Super Yamato A-150: this model exists http://www.hlj.com/product/FUJ42142

Alsace: take 2 1/700 Trumpeter/Pit Road Richelieu and act as in Montana. Again more study is needed

The H-Class has been done in resin by HP models and IHP models (i think). IHP also do the the N3 and G3 british designs from the same family as the Nelsons, They also did the Montana and late WW1 designs for the Lexington as Battlecruiser, the Amagi battlecruiser and the US Tillman battleship.

Incomparable, yeap an Airfix 1/600 Hood or possibly a Repulse may do the trick to scaleorama it to 1/700.

The HMS Lion is an akward one as whilst the profile is similar to the KGV, it actually has a transome stern as per Vangaurd, same goes for the bows which have a greater flasre than the KGV similar to the Vanguard (See they worked out the flaws with the seamanship of the KGV design for the later projects). The other issue is the turret rings would need to be adjusted to cover the larger 16 inch triple turrets (which were a new design) instead of the two quad 14 inch turrets and the twin 14 inch turrest in B position.

That Super Yamato kit only has the turrets for the twin 20 inch turrets, its still a standard Yamato kit.

Whoops missed one

Alsace, theres a rather good book published last year on French battleships by John Jordan & Robert Dumas that covers the follow designs to the Richelieu. It may be worth comparing the various hull shapes for a suitable donor kit as the Richelieu is rather tear drop shaped due to the main armament located fwd.

HMS Lion was actually being built at the start of the war, along with her first sister-ship, Temeraire. They were both stopped and then scrapped on the slipways about halfway through the war.

Wait till you see what the later 1945 design for Lion was like, that had a pair of 16inch Triple Turrets forward and then the Island aft with 12 of the MKVI 4.5 twin turrets as secondonary armament/AA and plenty of 40mm bofors in radar guided mountings

I made a model of the "Super-Yamato" because it was literally a Yamato with different armament. But...I am not sure the ship would be better than the Yamato--there are only *SIX* barrels on the super-Yamatos, and *NINE* on the Yamato---I don't really think the extra 2" diameter would offset the lesser barrels. 50% more chance of getting a hit per salvo via Yamato.

Plus your 20" muzzle blast would rip bits off your own ship when firing, and kill all your exposed AAA gunners.

Thorvic: What are you using as a base for your late Lion there?

Sequoiaranger: I plan to build a version of your HMS Magnificent at some point. Love the concept. Might give her 16" turrets though.

Hi Pyro

Believe it or not its a Trumpeter Jean Bart Battleship with the raised deck for the superstructure removed, the stern built up to a transome stern and the bows slightly blunted. It appears to fit the bill for the 1945 designwith the guns forward, but the article i have on the class has at least 4 different versions and configurations with this being the last.
