FINALLY got a chance to start something for this GB!

Dug out my three Revell 1/72nd Curtiss Hawk-75As (P-36s) to discover that one of them (which I confess I didn't really look at when it arrived from an ebay purchase) had gluey fingerprints on it. Not unrecoverable, but not in the context of a quick'n'dirty build. Oh well, bits for the bits box......

The two kits are of very different ages but obviously from the same mold. However the older one (old enough to have the cut-out-and-mount cover painting) has the canopy moulded in two pieces so you can pose it open, while the newer one has it closed. Hard to understand that change really: the one-piece canopy sprue doesn't appear to have more than a tiny amount less plastic in it..... Anyway, it suits me fine because my intention is to have one parked and one flying with slightly different, but related, markings, so the parked one can have the open canopy. I'm still "black holing" both cockpits though, since I regard this build primarily as a painting exercise, not a super-detailing one, and I want to get both built as fast as possible.

Does the old one come with one of those groovy flight stands? The revell kits of that era which I have both came with them, and I really wish modern kits bothered with this excellent feature!
There are no good kits, bad kits or grail kits, just kitbash fodder.

I'm afraid not, but since the pilot figure was missing, perhaps the stand went with him....

Well I have a new pet hate: Hawk-75A tailwheel doors. They are apparently made from recycled grasshopper legs and retain some characteristics of their former owners, given the fact that I've ended up scabbling about on the floor for one FIVE times this afternoon. Thank TANJ I resisted the call for carpet up there...

Having trouble settling to this one - non-modelling issues, I think. Anyway, got the fuselages and wings together. Photos later.

Glued them together as per instructions and then realised from reading that the underwing ammo box pods were unique to USAAC P-36Cs and I can't find ANY evidence that ANY export aircraft had them.... :banghead: Oh well, bit of whiffjitsu with the back story required......

Okay, here they are, ready for a coat of rattle can white and modelled by my glamourous assistant:

Don't get on my case about the black window scallops: I've already changed my mind about them, hence why they're not masked.

An American volunteer squadron flying Hawk 75s? Yowsa what a great idea!

How about the Lincoln Ellsworth squadron?

I'm really looking forward to seeing how this one comes out, Weaver!

Well after the diversions of a week of that rarest of commodities, interesting Polly Ticks, I finally got back to these today, finally got the masking right (which I'm holding back for effect), finally got some Red red on....... and screwed it up  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Some strange spurty, reactiony, I-dont-bloody-know-about-airbrushesy thing happened on one wing panel. Not fatal, just depressing. I'm going to go and paint some little bits with a good old fashioned BRUSH and try not to think about sandpaper......

I feel your pain.  I'm also really looking forward to what you do with these little suckers.  Love the P-36.  :)

Fighting me all the way these...... :banghead:

UP: the strange reactiony bit vanished as it dried.

DOWN: I started to mask off the red stripes, re-positioned a piece of tape, and the red paint pulled off.

UP: The pull-off was small enough to pass off as weathering, so I decided to count my blessings and give it all a coat of matt varnish before masking.

DOWN: Parts of the matt varnish dried milky...... :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

And what do you know? Three days off, and modelling funk hits: just spent an hour trying and mostly failing to get a simple masking job right.

Having a serious mojo deficiency at the moment......

I feel ya.  On the up side, you still have a generous time frame left!

Man them is some serious Mojo issues.

A small huzzah from me though to keep going

Okay, sorry folks, but I'm officially giving up on this one now, which is a bit of a pisser because I've bought a load of kits for it. I've lost interest in the Hawks, work and real life are eating my time, and other things are now grabbing my butterfly-like attention in the time I do find.

I will get back to the SCW at some point though.
