Westland Wasp Model Query

Hey Guys, Can Anyone tell me if the Westland Wasp Helicopter is Available in Model Form? Reason i'm Asking:The Final Option! i thought the Helo used by the SAS was a Westland Wasp and would like to get one if possible. Thanks for Looking.Dan

I think you mean the Westland Scout, a related development.  If so, Airfix did a kit in 1/72.  Not sure if it's still available.

The SAS used Scouts (skid u/c rather than wheels). The Airfix kit hasn't been produced for a while. They come up on ebay fairly frequently, but often go for stupidly high prices. Just keep your eyes open, check ebay at odd times when there arn't many buyers around and try to snag a bargain.

There was one in 1/48 scale a good number of years ago. By Fujimi I think.

Jim's right, the only Wasp is the 1/48 Fujimi kit and the only Scout kit is the 1/72 Airfix kit.

It's possible to bash a Wasp from the Airfix Westland Scout, I've seen an article on it & I think there are conversion sets avaialble.  The two helicopters are basically the same but the differences are enough to make a conversion a little tricky.

I've done the Wasp-from-Scout conversion in 1/72 and it is, as Mossie says, a trifle tricky. The landing gear is the problem, it's like an F1 car, double wishbones top and bottom and teeny-weeny wheels. I think I used some from an Airfix Caravelle.

C Scale did a very good conversion in white metal, but they've been out of production for many years now, sad to say.

Airwaves used to do a conversion, I've been looking out for one for a very long time.  Back in the 80's, Fujimi had announced they were going to do a 1/72 kit too, but nothing came of it I think.

Thanks for that Simon, they also had a white metal conversion too but I've not seen it for ages.  I've got the other white metal sets for the Scout though, better engine and detail parts, and another with little missiles.

AFAIK the Airwaves Wasp conversion and the C Scale one are the same thing. There was some tie up between C Scale and ED Models in Brum, and ED are behind Airwaves too.

I saw a real one at Weston-super-Mare at the weekend, they have a pristine example in the Helicopter Museum there. It's positively minute, even on that long stalky landing gear.
