Found the Airfix Mig-15 at the LHS today so had to grab it.

Now, got to figure out how to do the black checkers on the tail and the yellow bands around the fuselage and wings.

Naw, thinking more something like this:


Problem is the wings are further back on the Mig and the body is shorter so not sure I can fit the band, star and code.  Also, the tail is fatter and slanted more so can't just use the decals from an 86 like I had originally planned.  But I will figure out a way.

Now, if I can get my hands on a F-86 kit I could try it in something like this:

I´m agree with you with the camos of Mig 15 you´ve here (not overall NMF). They´re very nice.

I´m thinking of using it for my north Korean SU 9 K. Do you like it?.

Would look good.  The Airfix kit has those decals but didn't include markings for the top of the wings, just the bottom.

There are a few aircraft that could fall into this GB if the War lasted past 1953:

F9F Cougar
F-86D Sabre
FJ-2 Fury
A2D Skyshark
A3D Skywarrior
A4D Skyhawk
A2J Super Savage
F4D Skyray

Those are just the ones I can think of off the top.

I read an account from a Navy F4D pilot that had flown against MiGs in F9Fs over Korea, and he said that they'd have swept the skies clear of MiGs had they had Skyrays, the thing was so maneuverable.

That raises a few interesting thoughts.

How would the F-102 done in similar circumstances? Or was it too late to have participated in an extended Korean War as we're discussing?

It may have done well, but it would have survived more on speed than the F4D.  Apparently in the hands of an experienced pilot, the F4D was one of the most maneuverable planes of the jet age, being inherently (some would say dangerously) unstable, the best pilots using that to their advantage.

The first YF-102 flew in October 1953.  The area-ruled YF-102A flew almost a year later.  102s flew some bomber escort missions and a few improvised ground attack sorties in Vietnam, so I suppose they could be pressed into service in either role.  I just wonder how effective the early GAR-1 Falcons would have been.

All this talk about F4Ds has got me thinking!  I usually don't like Gloss Sea Blue camo but I think a Skyray would look pretty darn sexy in it!  I've never seen one painted that way anyway.  I've got a 1/72 Tamiya F4D in the stash, put me down for that if we ever get this GB up and running

Yeah, shots of even the prototype in that livery are pretty rare.  He's an advert and a couple of photos, though.
