You know, this would be a good idea - would cetainly prompt second looks, especially in RAF colours.  I've been toying with the idea of a quick cut and shunt with an Airfix Mossie and a Revell (ex-Matchbox) Beau for a bit of a quick-build laff.  May yet still do it if I come across some cheap 2nd-handers of each.  Trouble is, every time I get all wistful about the idea, I can't help but think that the resultant beast would warrant Centaurus rather than Hercules engines.

Well, I'm already ahead of you there!  I've a radial Mossie with Centaurus engines and was doing it as an abject lesson in why it shouldn't be done!

I was given an Airfix Beaufighter, I'm sure I can find some spare Airfix Mosquito bits and some resin engines if you fancy it though.  I will be keeping the Beaufighter decals - the sheet in the Airfix one is quite nice, which about the only bit that is...

i agree with Lee's Argentinian suggestions, esp the Calquin and Pulqui II as it actually saw service abiet briefly, im thinking any subjects would have to have a wide appeal and be sellable like the previous releases in the range hence my prev idea of a Miles M.52 i know AV. resins do one but im sure Colin's would be waay sharper and the differing versions would allow multiple releases.

cheers, joe

How about the special fighters from the Ace Combat series?

Wyvern,
Morgan, etc

I like your suggestions Lee, and I don't want to pour water over your cornflakes, they've all been done.  Llama Models do the Calquin (I've got one) and the Pulqui II in 1/72 and IIRC 1/48 too. O'Neil did all of them including the Namcu in 1/72 (although I think it looks like a cross between a Hornet and a Welkin).  Any of these in resin would be good though.

Yes, but these are all very obscure vacforms (which seem anathema to most modellers anyway) and damned near impossible to get hold of in the UK.  The Calquin is decidedly basic too.

A Clyde engined Wyvern would be very nice though.  Don't think it could be done as a conversion as there's too many changes from the later S.4.  However, a conversion for the Trumpeter kit to backdate it to one of the early Python engined aircraft would be doable.

And if you can twist Paul Lucas' arm for Mossie stuff, the thimble nose for the early NF.XII would be a simple conversion for the Tamiya kit - he may even have his old Airkit NF.XII conversion to use as a basis and if not I can find one.  I'd also like a Sea Mosquito TF.37 too.  I'd also stongly recommend a late bomber canopy for Mosquito B.XVIs and B.35s

Supported!  As a further suggestion, what about a 1/48 conversion for the Planet Models or Kiwi Resins CA-15s to make it possible to do the R2800 versions?

Why's that then, curious to know.  From a 'real' or whiffing perspective?

Anyway, here's a more sensible contribution to the thread than my first one.  All 1/72, all from the BSP books:

Folland Fo117
Gloster P250
Hawker P1030
Hawker P1064
Hawker P1087
Hawker P1090
Supermarine 553
Westland N11/44
Westland W37

Mostly jets and a lot of Hawker!  ;D ;D

Thinking prop jobbies, how about the Gloster Reaper night fighter?

Convertable from the Magna Peregrine engined twin engine Gloster no name.  I've toyed with that one before.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, no matter how obscure! I will make a short list next week, just out of interest to see what is most popular. I will certainly be covering at least a few of the suggested kits and conversions, and will keep you up to speed as I go.

Is it worth posting a poll of the most likely ones?  That might give you a good idea of what to go for.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Can I make one last suggestion?  It isn't actually a Whiff, per se but it is something which I note is rather sadly lacking from the available, vast range of 1/72 models.  The Voutour.

Azur have had one in the works for some time so its unlikley Colin would invest in a resin one as sod law dictates that the kit will finally be released as the resin kits nears completion.

Don't forget Colin will need to check his short list to see which projects are vaible, not just on size and cost, but also mainstream awareness and popularity, and of course what information is available for his master makers to work from. The later two are the main reason for preferring designs that got to mock up, as generally there are more detailed drawings available and photos of the mock up and models to better gauge the shape and feel of the design.

Looking forward to see which suggestions make the short list.

Cheers
