Saab J29 Tunnan

Found a long dead thread in the alt. history section with some Tunnans in (http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,12717.0/highlight,tunnan.html) and it got me thinking.

Thoughts went something along the lines of...
- A VG Tunnan would look a lot like an x5 and would be a pretty cool little ship board aircraft.
- Since the tunnan uses a Ghost engine (which is massive) and navies are apt to prefer multi engined aircraft, what modern smallish engine could I shoe horn two of in the place of one ghost? I came up with the Ardour. Two of which would provide twice the thrust for slightly more than the weight of a single Ghost and with room to spare!
- Moving along the modernisation lines I thought that it could do with a radar, and as I am putting in two engines with twice the thrust it could probably do with twice the inlet area.

The result

I wasnt sure how well I could transmogrify a VG set up so I didnt. I then went looking for two Adours and found the Jag (perfect ) so I ripped out its engines and intakes and shoe horned them onto the frame of the Tunnan.
I still would like to try to lengthen the nose gear to give it a bit more AoA on take off and fit an arrestor hook. I was also considering adding a copilot/nav/radar op. Now that the nose is clear of ducting I reckon they would fit snugly side by side. I think I might be pushing it for weight. But this is a wipwhif so I can always just lengthen the wings

Actually the old Revell 'fit-the-box' X-5 may well be usefull there.

The Tunnen was pretty much based on the German Focke Wulf Ta-183 and gave rise also to the Mig-15.

And your evidence for that claim is?

The only aircraft the Ta 183 influenced was the Pulqui II in Argentina, which was built by Kurt Tank (the Ta 183 was designed by one of his engineers) based on the Ta 183 II (more conventional looking than the more commonly known Ta 183). That's pretty much the extent of it.

The Mig-15 has a pretty clear history and wasn't influenced by the Ta 183.

The J29 was influenced by German swept wing data, but not based on any proposed German design.

Indeed, but this is WhiffWorld, and it was in Stockholm for that show too by the look of it.
