Burncycle

Was just messing around while I was waiting for the paint to dry on another project and decided to modify a 1/72 scale BD-5 for fun.

Some of it is a bit of scale o rama, armed with IIR Hellfires (1/144 scale mavericks), a couple of MANPAD derived AAM similar in class to the Stinger (1/144 scale sidewinder), and a new landing gear (1/144 scale F-16 gear), scratchbuilt booms and the vertical stabilizers came from the junk parts box. Of course up-engined using a new powerplant based on the ALCM engine.

The kit came with several aircraft so I'm thinking about messing around with the others too

That's awesome JayBee! Wish I had seen it earlier!

Looks pretty neat!

But the real achievement, of course, is that you've managed to make the tiny Skyhawk look like a really big plane!

Must, then, my projects bend to the iron yoke of a mechanical system? Is my soaring spirit to be chained down to the snail's pace of matter?

Gondor

Is that the "aircraft" that James Bond flew in at the start of one of his films?

Pierce Brosnan, as "James Bond", flew an out-of-gas BD-5 into a gas (petrol) station, ringing the bell-cord, and telling the station attendant to fill 'er up!

This "stunt" actually happened to a real BD-5 pilot who had engine trouble over a freeway, signaled the drivers below of his intention to land, and then dropped down and coasted down an offramp and into a gas station. It was a fabulous REAL story that they incorporated into the Bond film for humor.

The Bond stunt was a gas!

Nice!

but IMO sidewinders can damage fins

I love it any way.
Will die without understanding this world.

Lovely job!  I'll have to look out for this kit next time I'm at a model show.

Use a small explosive charge to jettison them free of the aircraft before the motor kicks in?
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

It was Roger Moore actually.

Most pylon launched weapons do that anyway, they have shotgun sized cartridges inside the pylons to kick the weapons clear of the wing's airflow.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

The Rat

Bittersweet for me. I love what you've done, but it brings back memories of the 1/1 scale BD-5 that I had a downpayment on before the engine certification troubles. Guess I'll just have to imagine myself flying your creations. ;D
