I've got some photos,  but I'm new here so haven't figured out how to attach them to posts.  Help please?

Right. When you are in the reply box you will notice an "Additional Options..." label to the bottom left of the box. Click on that. One of the options is Attach: You can use the "Browse" button to attach a picture direct from your pc. Max size is 256kb. By clicking on the (more attachments) you can attach a maximum of 4 in any one reply.

Hope this helps, if not send me a PM

Chris
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Combining the topic form the Idea bank with this one.  Don't need the same thing in two different spots.

those aussie 6x6 Landys are nice so we'll have to wait another 25yrs to get a model of it !!

The Pug 405 would be neat -- jack it a bit higher, remove the roof & rear deck or add a roof mg station.

The French troops use a nice large, chunky, 4x4 truck which looks the thing too.

How about the UK's new Jackal 4x4 & Coyote 6x6 ??
you may as well all give up -- the truth is much stranger than fiction.

I'm not sick ... just a little unwell.

When thet Australian SASR crossed into Iraq back in 2003, they were in their home grown LRPV (Long Range Patrol Vehicle) 6x6 Land Rovers and SRV (Surveillance Reconniassance Vehicle) 4x4 Land Rovers.  They were mounted with a mixture of M2HB .50cal, Mk19 40mm and Mag 58 7.62mm, plus personnel weapons.  Within each troop of vehicle would also be found  Javelin ATGM's and in some cases 81mm mortars.  There are several reported incidents where they engaged Iraqi BRDM's and armoured SUV's with their Javelins, with great results.

I don't think the Javelin had been adopted in 2003, mate.

I remember visiting the Thales factory and watching them outfitting the then new SASR SRV.  Very interesting.

I was also wandering down the highway in Perth the otherday and saw a SASR Jackal passing in the other direction.   Interesting looking vehicle.  I understand the SASR only have a about a dozen of them and most of them are overseas in Afghanistan.

It wasn't officially adopted by the ADF until later but the SAS did have them back then trust me.  They also had Stinger SAMs - something never officially adopted by the ADF .

The SOCOM budget is separate from the rest of the ADF.  The have an unlimted credit card, and don't have to go through all the rigerous trials and development experienced by the rest of us in the ADF.  They usualy get alot of stuff/gear prior to the rest of us.  The current new design of DPCUs is due SASR personnel making individual mods to thier uniforms.  The following is an extract from the Army newspaper, edition 1074

Five or six armed vehicles engaged them but the SASR used superior tactical manoeuvre and an application of heavy weapons to destroy most of the force.
The enemy eventually withdrew in disarray through a number of buildings but they were pursued by well-directed close air support and were ultimately defeated.
"Throughout this firefight, and others, the enemy were engaged by the SASR using a significant number of weapons.
"We used Javelin rocket launchers, heavy machine guns, Mk 19 grenade launchers and sniper rifles.
"This heavy lay down of fire power, coupled with the aggressive front foot approach of the SASR and extensive use of close air support, was enough to break the spirit of the most demanding enemy assault."
In another contact in the first few days, another small Australian element was confronted with a force of about 50 Iraqis, mounted in civilian four-wheel drive vehicles and trucks.
This enemy force aggressively assaulted the Australians using rocket-propelled grenades, mortars and machine guns.
The SASR held their ground and, despite stoppages on main weapons systems, destroyed the four-wheel drive vehicles and forced the enemy to dismount from their vehicles and trucks, which made them extremely vulnerable.
"The SASR pushed forward aggressively and routed the enemy.
"It was here that one soldier, because of the stoppage mentioned earlier, used all four of the available weapon systems mounted on his long-range patrol vehicle.
"Systematically moving from weapon system to weapon system, he was able to engage the enemy targets at vastly different ranges at enemy in different circumstances."

I have it on good authority that in the last statement that the 4th and last weapon system used was the troopers Glock 9mm pistol.
They also used their "mad max" cut down Unimog 1700 as motherships.  They weren't in the fight, but had .50cal for protection and carried extra bullets, fuel and rats.  I did have some other photos of one, but can't find at present.  They didn't go to the ghan as they don't have enoguth protection against OED's, plus they were pretty worn out after drving 1/2 way across Iraq.

The new Jackals are being name "Narrys", in honour of WO2 Narry who died in a training accident in Kuwait back in 2005. Accurate armour are doing some 1:35 resin kits with etched brass, very pricey, but well worth it and great detail.  Am waiting till my next trip to the UK to one, and to take my own photos.

Another case of the SAS "mafia" striking again.  I wasn't aware they had Javelin at that point in time.

Personally, I rather take the view of Field Marshal Slim WRT to "elite" forces.  Leads to interesting conversations across the dinner table sometimes. ;)

It might be opportune to ask if my fellow Aussies are aware of this event?  I try and attend every year.  Very interesting.
