Hi guys,

This wil be my last one for some time. I builded the Whirlwind last year for again the Telford show.
It's the 1/48 Classic Airframe one with the Engines from a Airfix Mosquito.

Enjoy this one.

Arnold

Finally out of the closet!!!!!!!

Beautiful work, but looks like its about to topple over with those big ole Merlins :)

Are Mosquito engines far bigger? (than genuine Whirlwind ones?) twice bigger?

Nope, similar in size but the Merlin is heavier:

Peregrine:
Length 73.6"; width 27.1"; height 41.0"; weight 1,140 lbs.
Displacement 1,296 cu in.

Merlin (single-speed supercharger):
Length 69"; width 29.8"; height 41.2"; weight 1,375 lbs.
Displacement 1,637 cu in.

Merlin (two-speed supercharger):
Length 71"; width 29.8"; height 43.0"; weight 1,450 lbs.
Displacement 1,637 cu in.

Very nice!

Does anyone know why a V-12 Merlin would have 5 instead of 6 exhausts per side?

The nacelles look like they came from a Mosquito kit, a single-stage Merlin Mosquito to be more exact.  IIRC (from the Sharp/Bowyer Mosquito book) there was a serious overheating problem of the wing structure where the rear exhaust stub was too close to the leading edge, consequently the last two exhaust stubs were siamesed into one exit (the very last one coming forward into the fifth one).  On the two-stage Merlin, the engine was positioned further out and didn't cause this problem and I would imaging the single-stage Merlin might not have caused a problem on a Whirlwind, it being all metal.

And after saying all that, to me anyway, the nacelle looks a little short but it is a stunning build.

The Merlin is actually only slightly larger, a little wider and a little bit longer - a matter of inches IIRC.  Its the associated cowlings with all their internal equipment which make them appear much larger.  You could, more than likely, fit a Merlin in the Peregrine cowlings with a bit of panel beating.   Thrust lines might be a bit different though.
